What makes Louis Vuitton’s Artycapucines bags works of art?

Artists Sam Falls, Urs Fischer, Nicholas Hlobo, Alex Israel, Tschabalala Self and Jonas Wood lend their visions to LV’s craftsmanship
Louis Vuitton has collaborated with six contemporary artists in launching Artycapucines, a capsule collection fusing artistic vision and the brand’s craftsmanship in its Capucines bag.
The handbag, introduced in 2013, is named after Rue des Capucines, the Paris street where the house opened its first store in 1854.
Artists Sam Falls, Urs Fischer, Nicholas Hlobo, Alex Israel, Tschabalala Self and Jonas Wood have all brought their distinctive modernity to the craftsmanship.
Los Angeles artist Israel, renowned for his kaleidoscopic brushes, has created a gradient wavy design, whereas painter Falls presents a romantic canvas version by applying his pigmentation skills to leaves and flowers collected from the gardens of the Louis Vuitton family home in Asnières-sur-Seine.
Self uses recycled fabrics and materials – 19 kinds of leather – in crafting the patchworked exteriors, which make each bag different. Limited to 300 pieces globally for each creation, the bags are priced at HK$72,000 (US$9,235).
