Her look at the 1990 Golden Globes was iconic ... now, the actress is suited and tied again – but with a twist – as she promotes After the Hunt

There are certain celebrity style moments that are so iconic, they form part of our cultural DNA. Take, for example, Princess Diana’s “revenge dress” and Marilyn Monroe’s white halter dress – both looks that have been referenced time and again in pop culture.
In 1990, Julia Roberts wore an oversized grey Giorgio Armani suit to the Golden Globes, where she accepted the award for best supporting actress for her role in 1989’s Steel Magnolias. The borrowed-from-the-boys look would go on to become one of the most iconic red carpet outfits in Hollywood history.

In her latest film, After the Hunt, directed by Luca Guadagnino, Roberts plays university professor Alma Imhoff. Her wardrobe in the film is full of clean, tailored suits that are sharp without being severe – echoing the actress’ own frequently androgynous style.

As Roberts steps out to promote the movie in New York, she’s taking her love for power dressing a step further by participating in the tie trend – with a bedazzled twist. Read on to find out how.

At the film’s North American premiere at the New York Film Festival in September, Roberts wore a wide-leg suit from Vivienne Westwood’s autumn/winter 2025-26 line. The cherry on top was a silver-grey tie spangled with vintage brooches from brands including Raven Fine Jewelers, Genevieve Herr, Serge Normant and Jordan Grossman.

Appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert this month, the actress wore a silky, dark-grey Salon 1884 suit that bore more than a passing resemblance to her iconic 1990 Golden Globes look by Armani. She paired the suit with a navy tie that was playfully adorned with nine kitschy vintage brooches.

Continuing the whimsy, Roberts’ latest look for the ongoing London Film Festival came from Simone Rocha’s autumn 2018 menswear collection. Robert paired her dark blazer and matching pleated shorts with a handmade, crystal embellished tie from Zars London, a British accessories label founded by Shazana Nawaz in 2020.
