BTS members love their pets and post cute dog photos to Instagram just like us – from V’s Yeontan and Jungkook’s Gureum to Jimin’s Ddosun, these are all the K-pop boy group’s four-legged friends

In some ways, the boys in BTS are just like us.

Okay, most of us aren’t releasing chart-topping hit after chart-topping hit, or casually buying entire buildings with the billions to our name. But when it comes to appreciating cute, fluffy animals, BTS and the rest of us are in agreement.

The K-pop group’s members are true animal lovers who regularly fawn over their pets on social media. And fans have even taken their cue by donating to animal organisations on their behalf.

Read on to meet BTS’ pets, who’ve risen to fame just like their owners.

When most of us get a new dog, the news doesn’t usually end up trending on Twitter, as much as we’d like it to. But that’s because we aren’t V. When V introduced his new Pomeranian to the world, the announcement was met with a massive response, taking 15th place on Twitter’s trending topics.

Meet Yeontan – which means coal briquette in Korean – or Tannie for short. V can’t seem to stop himself from taking videos and pictures of Tannie and uploading them to his social media, and now Tannie has a fan base, as well.

On September 7, Tannie’s birthday, the hashtag #3YearsWithYeotan trended worldwide. Fan base BTS V Union donated to the organisation Feeding Pets of the Homeless, and other fan groups around the world such as KTH Philippines and KTH Nepal made similar efforts in their local communities.

RM’s Spitz, Rap Mon

RM’s white Spitz – named Rap Mon, after himself – has kept his family company since 2013. But unfortunately, what with RM’s busy schedule keeping him from home, Rap Mon no longer recognises him when he visits. RM has expressed his sadness on social media, commenting that now Rap Mon only approaches him when he can ploy his pet with a dog treat. The technique clearly seems to work, though, since the rapper has also posted pictures of him taking the dog for walks and playing with it.

Suga’s poodle, Holly

Suga also has a family dog named Holly, who he first introduced in September 2016 by posting a photo with the caption, “Holly only likes the person giving food”. Suga is famously known for his love for his pup, even being nicknamed “Holly’s dad” by fans. However, he actually revealed that before Holly, he wasn’t really a dog lover – the poodle was just too irresistible.

Even his bandmates have called Suga out for how fond he is of his pet. In a June 12, 2017, clip from Suga’s radio show, DJ Suga’s Honey FM06.13, J-hope pointed out that Suga is so proud of Holly that he calls her the smartest dog ever even over something as basic has her going for a walk. Suga’s character design for the BT21 collaboration with Line Friends was also inspired by Holly.

Jin’s sugar glider, Gukmool

Jin’s pet is a little more exotic – he has a sugar glider named Gukmool, which means soup in Korean. Gukmool was previously joined by two other sugar gliders, Odeng and Eomuk – both words for fish cake, coming to “fish cake soup”, if you put all three together. Unfortunately, Odeng and Eomuk have since passed away from falls from their cages.

In a V Live session on March 20, 2019, Jin got quite emotional over the deaths of his pets, saying, “small animals can get into a lot of accidents, so I hope people who have small animals as pets take good care of them and have more information on them”.

He also once had a rescue white Maltese dog, Jjangu, who passed away as well.

The song Tonight, which Jin wrote and released in 2019, was dedicated to his pets, with the lyrics,

You’re in my every passing day, I’m in your every passing day If I close my eyes, it feels like those times we spent together will be brought back.

J-hope’s shih-tzu, Mickey

J-hope enjoys dressing up his shi tzu, Mickey, in cute outfits, from angel costumes to basketball uniforms. The dancer is such a concerned pet owner that he once turned to TV show My Pet Clinic in 2015 to voice his worries about Mickey’s nightly snoring, inquiring whether it indicates any health problems. (Apparently it’s due to restricted air flow, a common issue in brachycephalic breeds – breeds with short faces and noses – and can be alleviated through surgical procedures.)

J-Hope showed his love for his dog and his bandmates’ pets in his June 27, 2019, performance on music TV programme Show! Music Core, in which he changed the lyrics of his rap section in the song Dope to include the names of BTS members’ pets: Soonshim, V’s family dog that lives with his grandmother; Gureum, Jungkook’s dog; Ddosun, Jimin’s childhood dog; and Rap Mon, of course.

9 new Korean movies to watch out for in 2021

Jungkook’s Maltese, Gureum

Jungkook’s pet Maltese, Gureum – which means cloud in Korean – is a rescue dog that lives with his family back in Busan. In Bring the Soul: The Movie, Jungkook drew Gureum after saying, “Creative block, I need inspiration.” Even though he has impressive drawing skills, he added a humble note saying, “My Gureum is much prettier. This one looks like a different dog.”

In a 2014 interview with Ize magazine, Jungkook said that he misses Gureum a lot and asked the hyungs, or older members, of BTS if he could bring Gureum to their shared house. Unfortunately they all disagreed, saying that the house wasn’t a good environment for a dog, considering that the members would rarely be at home to keep it company.

Jimin’s dog, Ddosun

Back when he was a kid, Jimin had a pit bull terrier and Korean jindo mix named Ddosun. It’s unknown whether Jimin has a pet of his own at the moment – although he did upload a picture of two retrievers to BTS’ official Twitter account on May 6, commenting, “I hope you guys spend a good time with your family”.
Jimin’s love of animals is well-known, with fans giving him the nickname Gangyangee – the Korean words for dog and cat combined together. In celebration of his birthday on October 13, Korean fan base LSST (@laststop_jimin on Twitter) donated 220kg of dog food and 54 cartons of pet milk to the Dream of Dogs dog shelter under Jimin’s name.
