Castello di Mugnana, Italy
Perhaps one of the most Gothic and atmospheric castle stays to be found, the Castello di Mugnana has earned a reputation for its eerie lift, gates and chains, and throwback iron keys needed to navigate the property.
Tucked away in the hills and a bit of a challenge to access, the castle is, nonetheless, not without authenticity; it was damaged during the war against Florence in the 16th century. The medieval Castello di Mugnana – in the hills of the Chianti wine region no less – is also a design buff’s dream.
Just 15km from Florence, the noble Tuscan interiors complement the Middles Ages stonework and surrounding gardens for up to 16 guests. The castle’s previously concealed 13th century portico was revitalised to return medieval authenticity to the property.
