Malaysia is an Instagram dream destination for any traveller. It has everything you would want to liven up your feed: beaches, rainforests, bold cityscapes, dazzling temples and even hip street art. If you’re looking to impress your followers, head to “Truly Asia” Malaysia.

And even if you are one of the millions of tourists each year who do not venture far away from the country’s capital, Kuala Lumpur, a diverse mix of colours, terrains and textures await you and your selfie stick.

Here are our top five picks for the most Insta-worthy spots in Malaysia.

Masjid Wilayah, Kuala Lumpur

Why big brands love this Malaysian fashion influencer

Malaysia's official religion is Islam, and Muslims comprise about 60 per cent of the population. The Wilayah mosque, also known as the Federal Territory Mosque, is emblematic of Malaysia’s rich Islamic culture and history, and can be found just a short ride out of the city.

Considered the jewel of Kuala Lumpur, the mosque is a masterclass in Moroccan architecture. There are stunning turquoise-glazed tiles on the domes. The mehrab, an essential element in the architecture that directs Muslims towards Mecca, was said to be crafted by descendants of the Taj Mahal, and features carved marble inlaid with semi-precious stones.

Woodcarvings in the arches were imported from Kelantan and Terengganu, other states in Malaysia famous for their artisanal skills and handicrafts.

Petronas Towers, Kuala Lumpur

Also in Kuala Lumpur – and definitely on every tourist’s must-see list – are the Petronas Towers. Completed in 1996, the towers used to be world record holders for the tallest buildings in the world. Despite losing their title in 2004, the twin towers still stand majestically in the capital city’s skyline and attract millions of tourists each year.

Pro tip: Although the skyscrapers look great from multitude angles, a wide shot taken from a rooftop infinity pool is the Insta-worthy shot worth taking. The Face Suites in Bukit Bintang offer a relatively unblocked view of the towers from its 51st floor infinity pool.

Which of these 17 best resorts will you be booking this year?

Batu Caves, Selangor

Batu Caves are around 400 million years old and await you in the Selangor state of Malaysia. The Batu Caves are actually caves and cave temples, most significantly the temple cave to Lord Murugan, the ancient Hindu god of war and love.

At the entrance to the Batu Caves is the gold-painted Murugan Statue, the largest Hindu statue in Malaysia and third largest in the world. Indeed, the shrine to Murugan is one of the most popular Hindu shrines outside India.

The best vantage point for the Batu Caves would likely be the 272 concrete steps that lead up to the temple cave, which have been painted in a beautiful rainbow gradient.

One of the 878 islands in Malaysia

It is impossible to pick just one island of the 878 islands that comprise Malaysia for our number four spot. For a perfect sunset, white sands and clear blue seas, you are spoilt for island options in Malaysia.

We recommend island hopping, which is what many adventurous travellers do.

Our top three? The Manukan Islands or Gaya Island if you're near Kota Kinabalu and Sabah, or Perhentian Islands for the hippie vibes.

Georgetown, Penang

No Instagram-motivated holiday to Malaysia would be complete without a trip to one of the nation's most prized islands, Penang. This island differs from the other islands mentioned above because of its amazing street-art in the quaint colonial capital of Georgetown.

A stroll through the town and you'll stumble upon whimsical wall art featuring local faces and customs.

Penang is also known for its delicious cuisine, like char kway teow and asam laksa.
