Why not make like Leonardo DiCaprio and Julia Roberts and buy your own private island? At under US$6 million each, these 7 cost less than some people’s homes

For those that still have cash to splash during Covid-19, buying their own private island might just be the ultimate purchase, and (much) cheaper than a flat in New York
In a Covid-19 world, the desire for space and privacy has never been more paramount among prospective buyers. For those luxuries, people who have the money will spend it. But just how much are they willing to drop – and how far out are they willing to move?
In August, Manhattan saw a US$33 million penthouse go into contract. According to the buyer’s agent, Eric Brown, the main draw was not only the size of the interior space, but also the available outdoor space.
“To me, there is a huge push not just for boutique buildings, but bigger flats with more interior square footage and, number one on the list, outdoor space”, he said.
And while US$33 million is up there, it isn’t uncommon for people to spend millions upon millions of dollars on homes. In fact, according to a July report by London’s Evening Standard newspaper, the number of new high-end buyers looking for homes worth US$3.8 million or more had increased by 53 per cent since May 23 compared with the previous five-year average for that time of year.
But what if that price tag could get you more than just a house?
The seven islands that made this list are located all over the world, from Belize in the Caribbean to Washington in the US, and range from US$4.4 million to US$5.5 million.
