In 2006, soccer superstar David Beckham spared no expense when he reportedly bought a US$8 million Bulgari diamond necklace for his wife, former Spice girl Victoria. To show her gratitude, she flaunted the lavish jewellery at the 2006 Met Gala, according to StyleCaster. The necklace, embellished with rubies and diamonds, perfectly complemented her Roland Mouret prom dress.
A private jet
Tom Cruise revealed in an interview with Wired that he is a “multi-engine instrument-rated commercial pilot” – he can fly both commercial planes and helicopters. He loves flying so much, he reportedly bought a US$20 million Gulfstream jet for Katie Holmes when they were still married. He also gave daughter Suri a US$7 million jet when she was seven.
A US$15.4 million stake in a cricket team
If your partner is a wealthy sports enthusiast, why not buy an entire national cricket team? India’s The Economic Times reported in 2009 that UK-based Indian businessman Raj Kundra bought his then girlfriend (now wife), Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty, an 11 per cent stake of the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket team Rajasthan Royals. Don’t be fooled by the 11 per cent: that stake costs US$15.4 million. However, in 2016 and 2017, the cricket club was suspended for corruption and match-fixing, but then returned to IPL in 2018.
