What it’s like inside the new private club Soho House in Sheung Wan, where membership costs US$3,600 a year

The new Soho House Hong Kong in Sheung Wan offers private memberships to professionals in the creative industry, and has discounts for those who are 27 years old and younger.

Hong Kong will soon see the opening of its own Soho House, the international, private, members-only club catering to professionals in the creative industries. The club shot to global fame when it was mentioned in an episode of the popular series Sex and the City.

The first club opened in 1995 on London’s Greek Street and has since expanded to Europe, North America and Asia, opening a total of 23 clubs worldwide.

The Hong Kong club is situated between Sheung Wan and Sai Ying Pun on Des Voeux Road West.

Best known for chic and innovative designs that reflect the young, creative members (many who join Soho House come from the film, art, fashion, music and design industries), Soho House Hong Kong is inspired by the city’s culture and energy, which is represented in its style, from the colour palettes and patterns to the fabrics and furniture.

The interiors are infused with rich jewel tones, echoing those found on Hong Kong’s city streets, and are a nod to the classic Hong Kong films by directors such as Wong Kar-wai.

“Locally made pieces, such as hand-embossed basketweave ceilings and a bronze screen, are mixed with international touches from other Houses around the world”, said a representative from Soho House Hong Kong.

The lush interior of the new Soho House Hong Kong is gearing up to be a bespoke creative space reflective of its members.

Occupying the top floors of a new, 28 storey-building, the club has a pool room, drawing room and house brasserie, among other features. Its gym occupies three floors, and its co-working space, Soho Works, is set to open in the spring of 2020 and is spread over nine floors.

Though exclusivity is definitely its middle name, it does not regard itself as exclusive. “We’re inclusive to the creative community, but privacy is very important, and we never reveal the names of our members”, said a Soho House representative.

The Soho House interior is decorated with rich jewel tones, echoing those found on the streets outside and reflecting classic Hong Kong films by directors such as Wong Kar-wai.

There is, however, a set of rules. “Firstly, our houses are private places, so we have a no-photo rule, and ask members to respect others' privacy when in the [Soho] House. We also ask them not to post about other members on social media.

“Secondly, we are a private members’ club for people working in the creative industries, and ask members [and] guests to keep a relaxed dress code.

“Lastly, we prefer to keep communal spaces as phone-call-free areas, and ask members to keep phones on silent. There are also designated laptop areas to keep the vibe social.”

There are two types of membership at Soho House: Every House and Local House. Every House members have access to Soho Houses all over the world, while Local House members can enjoy facilities only in Hong Kong.

Stylish fabrics and bold colours used in designing Soho House Hong Kong reflect the creative members who join the private club.

In order to encourage creatives to join, the House also has an Under 27 (U27) membership, where anyone under that age can get membership at half the cost.

Applications are reviewed on a case-by-case basis, with applicants indicating their involvement and contribution to the local creative community.

The artworks are a constant theme that unite all the international Soho Houses.

Also, potential applicants are encouraged to include two existing members as proposers in the application. Memberships are set as follows per year: Every House, HK$28,000 (US$3,571); Local House, HK$22,000; U27 Every House, HK$14,000; and U27 Local House, HK$11,000. A one-time registration fee also applies of HK$4,800 and HK$2,400 for U27 applicants.
