Wine collector or social drinker? Here are 5 wine apps to help you get the right grape

There are many mobile apps that can help you make the right choices when it comes to wine drinking and wine pairings.

Wine is bigger business than ever – and because there is an app for everything – there are now an increasing number of apps out there for wine lovers, serving novices and seasoned aficionados alike.

So, whether you want to keep track of your personal collection, or choose the right accompaniment for that special dinner, there’s an app to help you get the job done. We tried out some of the most popular.

CellarTracker

Cellar Tracker app

Perhaps the most comprehensive app out there, CellarTracker – which has an equally comprehensive website to complement it – is renowned for its huge database of wine reviews. The app connects wine consumers with more than eight million tasting notes, for three million-plus wines, by a community in excess of 600,000 users.

Detailed information on grape varieties, wine regions and food pairing comes from an active community of consumers and professional users (including pro reviewers Antonio Galloni and Allen Meadows) that can help you with almost any recommendation.

Vivino: Buy the Right Wine

Vivino app

Not as broad (yet) but tilted more towards users, education and sales, Vivino is the world’s largest online marketplace and community-driven wine app. It’s more fun too, as users scan a photo of their bottle and wait for it to be located in the library. Nearly 50 million reviews, and more than 950 million scanned labels from over 200,000 wineries, by almost 40 million users – and friend tags – make it the Facebook of wine apps. Vivino can also be as personalised (for recommendations), public or private as users choose. If for some reason your wine is not there, the helpful and efficient administrators are quick to add it and send you “Thanks” for your contribution.

VinoCell

Vinocell app

Available in seven languages, VinoCell is not free, but is a must-have for serious collectors with considerable cellars. VinoCell allows users to track their cellar history (what’s stored, what’s gone), keep personal tasting notes and ratings from professional guides worldwide, and match foods with vintages. A visual wine rack, VinoCell can help locate wine merchants and source bottle valuations, manage tastings and keep detailed summaries that include category, a maturity icon, alcohol volume, score and pro rating sets (90,000 and counting) in addition to the usual name, winery and region. There are up to 40 summary fields, and the app makes room for three photos.

Decanter Know Your Wine

Decanter Know Your Wine app

One of the world’s most respected wine journals has the app expected of its long publication history. But more than just keeping track of what you’ve tried, Decanter’s micro-learning app provides a way for users to learn about their wine. Decanter uses pacing to help with learning in short lessons – similar to targeted language-learning apps. The more it’s used, the faster the progress, with the end goal being status as a Know Your Wine Grand Master. Finishing the programme promises you a better grounding in wine knowledge. Extra learning nodes can be bought, but the first sets are free. An ideal complement to any diary-type app.
