Will the next Porsche 911 – created with Boeing – be a flying electric car?

Last month at the Frankfurt Motor Show, Porsche finally made its entry in the EV space by launching the Taycan – the German automaker’s first-ever fully-electric car. But the latest news from Porsche indicates the company has much bigger plans in the electric mobility space that can revolutionise sustainable transport. Porsche has announced it is entering into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Boeing to jointly develop flying electric cars.

The MOU is to “explore the premium urban air mobility market and the extension of urban traffic into airspace”. Yes, you read that correctly; we might get a flying Porsche 911 in the near future.

“Porsche is looking to enhance its scope as a sports car manufacturer by becoming a leading brand for premium mobility. In the longer term, this could mean moving into the third dimension of travel,” says Detlev von Platen, member of the executive board for sales and marketing at Porsche AG. “We are combining the strengths of two leading global companies to address a potential key market segment of the future.”

As a part of the partnership between the two companies, an international team of experts will be formed that will study all aspects of air mobility, including the viability of premium flying cars in the near future. In fact, Porsche conducted a study in 2018 that predicted demand for such a vehicle will rise considerably after 2025. Currently, Porsche, in collaboration with Boeing and Boeing subsidiary Aurora Flight Sciences, is developing a prototype for an electric flying car that would be able to take off and land vertically. The official press release also came with a rendering of the conceptual flying car and it looks futuristic.
