STYLE Edit: Gucci brings its Christmas glamour to a balmy tropical paradise

Sometimes all you need for Christmas is a Gucci getaway.
The unconventional holiday campaign, conceived by Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele, features the unapologetically eccentric Gucci gang bringing Christmas to the Bahamas, or some equally balmy tropical paradise.

The campaign film by Harmony Korine features the eclectic passengers dressed in Gucci, boarding a cruise liner headed for warmer climes. Quite typically of Michele, the ocean liner concept is a deliberately nostalgic throwback. For this campaign, the creative director references the main mode of transport that founder Guccio Gucci would have been familiar with when designing travel bags and accessories for clients many decades ago. Slow, luxurious travel aboard an ocean liner with your finest Gucci seems almost as natural in 2019 as it was in the 1920s.

But this particular cruise seems more evocative of the 60s and 70s, particularly with the pop-surf soundtrack of The Beach Boys and Michele’s reference to the decades’ styles and silhouettes.
From the tinsel on the balustrades of the cruise liner to the “snowman” made of beach sand, the campaign film for Gucci’s “Gift Giving” campaign is rather heartwarming. Christmas is lovely however you make it, come snowflakes or sea breeze.

But perhaps the most significant scene is when we see Santa Claus has ditched the sleigh for a dinghy, ready to deliver gifts to the holidaymakers from the new Gucci “Gift Giving” editorial line.
Their excitement is palpable. From ready-to-wear pieces, shoes and accessories – including handbags, luggage and a new jewellery case – the “Gift Giving” edit is full of playful, whimsical pieces perfect for the season.
