Disney-inspired children’s bed by luxury brand Circu Magical Furniture looks like a VW hippie van, and at US$40,000 costs as much – what would you pay for a kid’s novelty bed?

More expensive than an actual Volkswagen minivan in its roomiest configurations, the Bun Van is a trippy toy bed for one or more animation-obsessed toddlers also likely to provoke fond memories among formerly globe-trotting parents
Your Gen Z-er likely won’t catch the 1960s references that connect this children’s room/bed with the iconic vehicle it is based on, but will nevertheless associate the van with the Disney movie Cars – specifically, the character Fillmore. The anthropomorphic VW minibus hippie that appears in the animated film was apparently the major design muse for the Bun Van, chosen with the aim of capturing the imaginations of Disney-obsessed children the world over.
With a fibreglass exterior complemented by chrome-plated details, and weighing a hefty 1,460kg, the Bun Van, handcrafted and hand-tailored in Portugal, is as sturdy as it is aesthetically pleasing. The exterior is made from a resin mould and the Circu team are more than willing to offer customisation. A bigger van that accommodates a king-size bed or bunk bed for your child’s playmates is also possible. (In its standard dimensions, the Bun Van measures 4 metres wide, 1.85 metres deep and more than two metres tall.)
Using a custom mould to make your toddler’s bespoke Bun Van can lift the asking price from its base level around US$39,000, to beyond six figures.
Glossy palisander wood veneer sets the tone for the interiors. Palisander has a deep rosewood hue that gives that sense of cosiness necessary for any childhood hideout. Besides the bed, there’s also space for a TV, desk, sofa, a few storage compartments and a mini fridge for drinks and midnight snacks.
