Who’s the greenest British royal? Meghan Markle practises weekday veganism, Prince Harry is fighting to save Africa’s national parks and Prince Charles says we should all eat less beef

A 2018 study by the University of Oxford reported that cutting down on meat and dairy products in our diets can reduce our individual carbon footprint by up to 73 per cent. And as environmental sustainability becomes increasingly non-negotiable, people are becoming more aware of the link between what we eat and the world we live in.

With a slew of famous figures jumping on the vegan bandwagon for both personal and environmental reasons, it should come as no surprise that members of the British royal family are not far behind. While not everyone adopts a strict plant-based diet, each of these royal highnesses share similar traits: they are mindful eaters and champions for a more sustainable world.

Meghan Markle

In her essay for the famed September issue of British Vogue in 2019, Markle's comments about eating chicken tacos hinted that she was more of a flexitarian than a vegetarian. She is known to advocate for organic food (she planted her own vegetables at Windsor’s Frogmore Cottage) and told Best Health Magazine that she eats vegan meals during weekdays. After her royal duties ended, the Duchess of Sussex did a voice-over for Disney’s documentary Elephant in exchange for a donation to Elephants Without Borders in Botswana.

The Duke of Sussex isn’t committed to a plant-based diet, but since his marriage to Markle, it has been reported that he follows a clean-eating lifestyle consisting of daily detox juices, smoothies and high-fibre vegetables. Prince Harry also advocates for action on climate change (he penned an essay on the importance of environmental conservation for The Telegraph in 2019) and has worked with several NGOs, including African Parks, which aims to protect African national parks and carries out wildlife conservation. He now serves as their president.

Prince Charles

Much of Harry’s wildlife advocacy may well have come from watching his father champion such causes his whole life. Prince Charles often promotes sustainability and organic farming. The UK’s Daily Express reported that he has “meat-free days” and only eats organic food. Back in 2011, the future king attended the Future for Food conference in Washington, leaving the audience with a bold call to arms by asking them to cut back on their beef consumption. In 2019, he launched the Sustainable Markets Initiative and Council, whose mission is to “lead and accelerate the global transition to a sustainable future”.

While specific details about Princess Eugenie’s diet aren’t known – compared to her elder sister Princess Beatrice’s public veganism – the 30-year-old royal is an avid supporter of environmental causes. The new mum has worked with several charities over the years, including Project Zero (which protects marine life) and Elephant Family, an organisation that works to save elephants and their habitats in Asia.

Kate Middleton

The Duchess of Cambridge is believed to favour less meat in her meals, instead opting for plant-based eats in keeping with her Dukan diet, consuming raw food (watermelon seeds, goji berries) and avoiding dairy when she can, according to Women’s Health. In 2018, the royal family turned a few heads when several vegan menus appeared at their annual Christmas dinner prepared by Carole Middleton, who is herself a vegan.

When it comes to environmental activism, Kate and William launched the prestigious global Earthshot Prize in 2019 to reward “individuals or organisations who come up with solutions to environmental problems”.
