Is this blinged-out Sony PlayStation 5 really worth US$2 million? Russian luxury brand Caviar’s Golden Rock version, launched for Lunar New Year, is a true objet d’art

What: Golden Rock Sony PlayStation 5

How much: Estimated HK$11.63-15.5 million (US$1.5-2 million)

Why: For any bitter gamer out there who didn’t get the Sony PlayStation 5 for Christmas, perhaps a little patience pays off. For the Lunar New Year, the Russian luxury brand Caviar debuted an all-bells-and-whistles gold-clad version of Sony’s latest and greatest games console. At a minimum expected price of HK$11.63 million, the new PS5 can be transformed into a geometric gold objet d’art that deserves nothing less than the top shelf in your living room’s entertainment system.

Caviar – whose notable clientele includes Fred Durst, vocalist of nu metal band Limp Bizkit, several Russian celebrities and Hollywood action star Steven Seagal – spares no expense on the PlayStation 5 concept. Golden Rock, as it is called, was launched as part of a collection of four new year offerings by the elite brand. (The “Fantastic Four” collection includes a customised pair of gold Nike Air Jordan trainers, a deluxe version of Apple’s new AirPods Max and a Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra worthy of any Russian oligarch’s attention.)

For the Golden Rock PlayStation 5 concept, designers were reportedly inspired by the geometry of gold ore. In this radical interpretation of Sony’s bestselling gaming console, Caviar imitates the dimensionality of the precious metal with eight sheets of 18-karat solid gold. In total, the console is fortified with around 20kg of the stuff, with more than 30kg used in its manufacture.

With such a substantial console, it is only natural that the gaming peripherals meet elite expectations, too. The Caviar controllers for the PlayStation 5 are revamped with tactile crocodile leather and gold inserts, offering a more luxurious, weightier feel to Sony’s usual plastic and rubber combination.

Indeed, the PlayStation 5’s new DualSense controllers have been getting as much attention as the console itself, particularly because of the haptic feedback capabilities which replace the traditional rumble motors. The result is a more immersive and stimulating experience as you score goals in Fifa 21, fire weapons in Fortnite or explore the rich worlds of The Pathless.

The only issue we can think of is: when you’re trying to immerse yourself in the PlayStation 5’s cinematic graphics on screen, how will you ever be able to tear your eyes from the shimmering golden vision just off it? #richpeopleproblems
