Shine bright: the most exciting jewellery launches this autumn, from Chopard’s Happy Butterfly x Mariah Carey collab, to Graff’s Goddess of Light collection and Van Cleef & Arpels’ Trésor Astral
Luxury jewellery brands are going hand in hand with celebrities even more than usual this year. The songbird supreme Mariah Carey herself is releasing a jewellery collection with Chopard. Inspired by a motif often associated with the singer, Happy Butterfly x Mariah Carey will be displaying diamond-studded butterflies this season. But she’s not be the only A-lister among the world’s greatest jewellery brands’ new releases – Van Cleef & Arpels and Graff are both lighting up the sky with bejewelled stars, too …
Chopard x Mariah Carey
Why is the world fighting over diamonds in Queen Elizabeth’s collection?
The Chopard x Mariah Carey Collection features a necklace, a pair of earrings and a ring, all entirely paved in diamonds; while the Happy Butterfly x Mariah Carey Collection transforms Chopard’s Happy Diamonds collection with butterflies, their wings paved with either diamonds or carnelian.
Carey approached the maison to create the collections because of its unmistakable aesthetic and its commitment to ethical values, in particular the use of certified Fairmined gold.
“I hope the wearers feel empowered and happy. Butterflies are a symbol of metamorphosis conveying renewed aspirations and a free-spirited approach to life so we hope to inspire women to live feeling free and empowered,” says Caroline Scheufele, co-president and artistic director of the maison.
Graff’s Goddess of Light
Graff doesn’t just display its high jewellery collections – it puts on travelling exhibitions to show them off. Witness, for example, the Graffabulous show that recently visited Hong Kong to feature items from the campaign of same name at the brand’s flagship boutique in Central. The British diamond expert even turned its VIP lounge into a champagne bar for the occasion.
What are métiers d’art watches and why are collectors obsessed with them?
The selection is named for the Goddess of Light – the two previous “chapters” took their cues from the Legend of Mermaids and Goddess of Divinity respectively – and, as such, made liberal play of dazzling yellow diamonds paired with white diamonds. The two came together on a range of pieces, including two sumptuous necklaces with 98.13 carats of stones each, and a further two drop necklaces with 181.47 carats of sparkle.
Van Cleef & Arpels Trésor Astral
Look at the handle of the Big Dipper, part of the constellation of Ursa Major and one of the most famous groupings in the night sky, and you’ll see two stars very close together. Known as Alcor and Mizar, they were traditionally used in the Middle East to test people’s eyesight.
Who was high jewellery brand Chaumet’s royal muse?
Now these stars are celebrated in appropriately sparkly fashion by Parisian jewellery masters Van Cleef & Arpels, in the form of the Trésor Astral necklace. It showcases two magnificent octagonal-cut sapphires, one at each end of the piece so that they sit next to each other when worn. One is a 31.17-carat Sri Lankan stone while the other, from Myanmar, weighs in at 22.82 carats, with the pair joined by an impressive trail of sapphires and diamonds.
The Trésor Astral is part of VCA’s Sous les Étoiles (“Under the Stars”) collection of 150 high jewellery pieces.
