There’s more than one way to make an impact with jewellery. To really stand out, read on to discover how to stack your rings, bracelets or necklaces to maximise their effect. Mix and match well and it can elevate even less expensive pieces, as well as creating a very individual look.

Of course, classic names like Saint Laurent and Chanel always bring a buzz, however they are worn. That goes especially for pieces that lean into the brand heritage, like the former’s use of house initials and familiar motifs in its new fine jewellery collection, and the latter’s show-stopping Tweed Royal necklace – definitely one for very special occasions.

Why wear one piece when you can pile on all of your favourite treasures at once?

Whether it’s an “arm party” of bangles collected from your travels, a constellation of twinkling ear piercings or artfully layered necklaces both meaningful and sparkly, there’s an art to stacking your jewellery.

Which naturally means there’s plenty of ways to do it. A maximalist could look to Giovanna Battaglia Engelbert, creative director of Swarovski, who piles on jumbles of exuberant necklaces; or fashion influencer and creator of shopping newsletter The Cereal Aisle, Leandra Medine Cohen, who mixes precious and kooky bracelets and bangles. Jewellery editor Ashley Davis blends styles and eras in her colourful curations while London-based New Zealand jewellery designer Jessica McCormack often shares more minimal ways of stacking.

Australian fine jewellery brand Sarah & Sebastian now offers “ear alchemy” studios in its boutiques, where customers consult piercers on curating an ear stack of twinkling diamonds or fine gold pieces.

If tangled necklaces drive you crazy, try mixed metals and different weights, and choose different lengths for chains and pendants.

Christie Wollenberg, London-based co-founder and creative director of jewellery brand Otiumberg, shares her stacking tips:
