1. Fendi Baguette – Sex and the City (1998-2004)

The Fendi Baguette is one of the most famous bags in pop culture, gaining worldwide recognition among luxury bag enthusiasts after being featured in the TV show Sex and the City. The scene in which Carrie Bradshaw, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, shouts as she is being mugged, “This is not a bag, it’s a Baguette!” has become a truly quotable one.

Created by Silvia Venturini Fendi in 1997, the Fendi Baguette was inspired by French women carrying the bread loaves of the same name under their arms. With a long silhouette, the bag fits under the arm as snugly and comfortably as a baguette does, and has over 1,000 variations, reappearing in Fendi’s collections with new identities over the years. Most recently the Baguette saw its 25th anniversary at New York Fashion Week – with Parker in attendance, of course.

2. Chanel 2.55 – Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)

Holly Golightly, played by Audrey Hepburn, famously carried the Chanel 2.55 during the last part of Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The bag encapsulated Hepburn’s character perfectly, given its classic, chic silhouette. Hepburn herself owned a collection of 2.55s in the 1960s.

The iconic handbag was created by Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel herself who, tired of having to carry her bag in her hand, looked at the hands-free packs of soldiers that inspired her to create the Chanel 2.55. The numbers in its name, 2.55, refer to its date of creation, February 1955. Featuring a long chain strap, the handbag has a quilted texture centring a “Mademoiselle” turnlock, a timeless design popular to this day.

3. Prada Spazzolato handbag – The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

In The Devil Wears Prada, Miranda Priestly’s (played by Meryl Streep) first appearance sees her walking out of a taxi carrying a grey Prada Spazzolato handbag, the logo of the bag in focus, while separate scenes show the employees at Runway magazine scrambling to prepare for her entry. This particular Prada bag is a classic as it first hints at the film’s title, establishing who the titular devil is.

In the film Le Divorce, Edgar Cossett (played by Thierry Lhermitte) gifts his mistress, Isabel Walker (Kate Hudson) a red crocodile Hermès Kelly. The bag plays an important role in the plot, being a symbol of Edgar and Isabel’s secret relationship while building up to the climax.

The Hermès Kelly was originally called a sac à dépêches, but was renamed after the actress Grace Kelly, who had used it to shield her pregnant belly from paparazzi in an iconic picture and popularised it in the public’s eye, per Baghunter. The particular Kelly in Le Divorce is a gorgeous shade of red, catching the eye from miles away.

5. Louis Vuitton Murakami Cherry Blossom Pochette Accessoires – Mean Girls (2004)

Who doesn’t remember Mean Girls, the movie ensnaring us in the hold of Regina George, played by Rachel McAdams? The Poshette was a recurring accessory from Regina’s wardrobe, an iconic bag in pink featuring cherry blossoms and the Louis Vuitton monograms as part of a collaboration with Takashi Murakami in 2003.

6. Orange Hermès Birkin – The Proposal (2009)

The orange Birkin carried by Margaret Tate, played by Sandra Bullock, is one of the most coveted bags ever, establishing her status symbol as a city girl working for a publishing company in Toronto.

Bullock reportedly saved up to buy a Birkin herself, after she had wrapped up filming another movie, and proceeded to use the bag in The Proposal, per Sophie Summer. Complete with gold hardware, the Birkin is famously named after British actress Jane Birkin and dreamed up on a flight from Paris to London by then Hermès executive chairman Jean-Louis Dumas who was sitting next to her.
