As he turns 53, we take a look at the American actor’s film portrayals as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Sherlock Holmes and Charlie Chaplin

Actor Robert Downey Jr turns 53 today. 

As a birthday gift to the American who was born in New York City on April 4, 1965, we’re going to take a look at three of his most iconic film roles.

1. Tony Stark/Iron Man 

Most film fans around the world know him as the “genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist” who dresses in a red and gold suit – Tony Stark/Iron Man.

Downey Jnr played the Marvel superhero in Iron Man, released in 2008. He appeared in The Incredible Hulk in 2008. In 2010, he was back in Iron Man 2, followed by Marvel’s The Avengers  (2012), Iron Man 3 (2013)and Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015). He reprised his role as Iron Man in  Captain America: Civil War (2016), Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), and will appear in Avengers: Infinity War, which is due for release worldwide from April 25.

2. Sherlock Holmes

Downey Jnr has twice played the eccentric “consulting detective” with a talent for forensic science, Sherlock Holmes.

He starred as Holmes, alongside British actor Jude Law as Dr John Watson, in Sherlock Holmes, released in 2009, and both actors reprised their roles in the sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows in 2011.

3. Charlie Chaplin 

Downey Jr won universal acclaim and was nominated for an Academy Award as best actor for his performance as real-life British comic actor and filmmaker Charlie Chaplin in the 1992 British-American biographical comedy-drama, Chaplin, directed by Richard Attenborough.

Although he missed out on winning the Oscar, he was voted the 1993 best actor for his portrayal by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts or Bafta.
