Salvatore Ferragamo has launched its first sustainable sandals – Rainbow Future – in its Creations collection.

Inspired by the rainbow suede sandals made for actress Judy Garland in 1938, the Rainbow Future sandals are crafted in organic crocheted cotton with leather lining without any carbon dioxide emissions or water consumption.

The glue, non-galvanised brass and sewing thread used in the production process are made from recycled materials. Plus, the cotton bags and cardboard shoe boxes in the packaging are biodegradable and recyclable.

Although the platforms of the sandals are made of veritable wood, Ferragamo says 100 orange trees will be planted in Catania, Sicily to compensate for that. The sandals are limited to 100 pairs.

In the company’s 2017 Sustainability Report, it highlighted a three-year plan to minimise its impact on the environment.
