Which classic vehicle won the poll as the best film car of all time?

James Bond actor Sean Connery with an Aston Martin DB5, which is ranked among the top 40 film cars of all time in a new poll, but which car was voted number one?

James Bond’s Aston Martin DB5 is the greatest film car of all-time, according to Hyundai’s survey of 2,000 car-loving Britons.

The iconic Bond car was first seen in 1964’s Goldfinger and has appeared in seven Bond films to date, most recently in 2015’s Spectre.

The much-loved DB5 has a host of gadgetry, including a bulletproof rear windscreen, inbuilt machine guns, tyre slashers – and an ejector seat.

The flying car Chitty Chitty Bang Bang finished second in the poll – released last Thursday – having starred in the 1968 film of the same name, which was based on a children’s book by Bond author Ian Fleming.

Doc Brown’s DeLorean from the Back to the Future film trilogy was third.

Herbie, the lovable Volkswagen Beetle star of five Disney films so far – including the first, The Love Bug – came fourth and the Batmobile from Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight films finished fifth.

Hyundai commissioned OnePoll.com’s research to celebrate the appearance of its all-new Veloster, KONA and Next-Generation Santa Fe in the new Marvel film, Ant-Man and the Wasp, which has been a hit in Hong Kong and around the world.

The most prominent of the three cars in the new Ant-Man film, released around the world last month, is the Hyundai Veloster – featured in hot pursuits, fast manoeuvres and incredible stunts while serving as the ultimate escape vehicle.

The film has been a useful publicity vehicle for the marque, Hyundai says.

“Having our all-new Veloster immersed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a great way to entertain consumers and showcase the vehicle’s stylish design and performance capabilities to a massive audience,” a marque spokesman tells STYLE.

“We wanted to take full advantage of this collaboration by engaging fans and providing them with experiences beyond the big screen.”

Hyundai’s film-car poll also featured popular vehicles including the sixth-ranked James Bond’s Lotus Esprit S1, which featured in 1977’s The Spy Who Loved Me, starring Roger Moore,  and seventh-placed Greased Lightning from 1978’s Grease, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John

Charlie’s getaway Minis from 1969’s The Italian Job, starring Michael Caine, secured eighth spot, while the Ford Mustang GT Fastback from Steve McQueen’s Bullitt came ninth.

Cars from Marvel films appear several times – including Iron Man’s Audi R8 from the first Iron Man movie and his Acura NSX Roadster concept from the 2012 film, Marvel’s The Avengers.

Agent Coulson’s Lola from Marvel’s The Avengers made the list along with Hank Pym’s Triumph Spitfire from the first Ant-Man film.

The Batmobile features three times in the list: the Tim Burton version (at No 11), the version made famous by Adam West in the 1960s (at No 10) – along with fifth-ranked car in Nolan’s films starring Christian Bale.

Six out of 10 people polled in the survey think cars are an integral part of cinema history and around half say cars feature among their fondest film memories.

The research also identified the greatest car chases of all time.

Number one was the sequence from The Italian Job; second place went to the chase in Bullitt and third spot went to the chase scene from 1971’s The French Connection, starring Gene Hackman.

The poll also chose the greatest car chases of all time. Number one was the sequence from ‘The Italian Job’; second place went to the chase in ‘Bullitt’ and third spot went to the chase scene from 1971’s ‘The French Connection’

Researchers found that 55 per cent of poll respondents agree that the ideal car chase should feature near misses, 32 per cent want to see vehicles driving into oncoming traffic, and 29 per cent want crashes.

Twenty-eight per cent of people in the poll think the perfect chase needs police cars, one-quarter want to see pedestrians jumping out the way and one-fifth want wheelies.

Chases should last four minutes, 23 seconds on average, movie-motoring-mad respondents say.

Hyundai also has a new film car.

“In addition to the Veloster featuring in the latest Marvel film, we’ve also just unveiled our Kona Iron Man Edition SUV at Comic Con,” the marque reveals.

“Its interior and exteriors are inspired by the iconic Iron Man suit and it’ll be built-to-order with limited global production, on-sale in the United Kingdom next year.

“Our relationship with Marvel is more than just product placement as we aim to create custom experiences that resonate with the Marvel audience.

“The Kona Iron Man Edition is a perfect example of blending our two worlds together into one special vehicle that we hope will excite fans of both brands all around the globe.”
