The use of crystals in healing is a controversial form of alternative medicine.

Although many people discredit its effectiveness – arguing that there is no scientific evidence to support its use, and that it is simply woo-woo nonsense – many others believe in its use as a way of healing ailments and promoting positive energy in the body.

Ashley Bellino and her boyfriend and business partner Jeremy LeBard never regarded themselves as hippies and were never crystal enthusiasts in the past.

LeBard’s background in technology and start-ups means he has developed a keen eye for businesses with large potential.

The couple’s Stoned Crystals – an Australian online retailer selling crystals – is one of them.

We met Bellino and LeBard, co-founders of Stoned Crystals, when they were in Hong Kong to launch their line in Lane Crawford and they told us how crystals can work positively in our lives and which crystals they would recommend to busy Hongkongers.

“Crystals have a very stable atomic vibration due to their crystalline lattice structure, which is why they are used in watches to keep time, and in radios to conduct frequency,” Bellino says.

“We, on the other hand, are a very complex mix of vibrations that can easily be disturbed, become unbalanced, which makes us sick and unwell.

“All kinds of things can affect our vibration – from external influences such as electromagnetic and geopathic stress, to [negative] thought patterns and suppressed emotions.”

Woo-woo what?

“Seeing what Ash was doing with crystals, I have always been looking for different tools for wellness for my own private self,” LeBard says.

“In school, they don’t teach you how to live.

My lifelong hobby is to find out how to effectively do meditation and mindfulness, and crystals fit naturally into the lives of anyone who is doing meditation, yoga and movement – beautiful things from Earth fit into that.”

Bellino says, “I guess I did have a little rose quartz when I was younger, but I never got into it.

“I used to have a jewellery brand and I used to go looking for crystals for the jewellery pieces.

“It led me to the discovery of crystals. It was like magic: it felt like being a child again.

“I couldn’t learn anything about these crystals when I started researching then. It took me almost two weeks to figure out what to do with these crystals or what to buy.

“I felt like it was not accessible. Lots of people were doing jewellery, but I felt that not a lot of them had a deeper meaning behind it. Crystals gave that special element to me.”

1. Crystals improve mindfulness

“It wasn’t until I spoke to a psychologist friend of mine that I knew how powerful crystals are,” LeBard says.

“He played a crystal sound bowl and my mind went quiet.

“He said, ‘This is mindfulness’. This is what happens when you pick up a beautiful crystal.

2. The heart knows

LeBard says, “The heart chakra [in Indian thought, one of seven centres of spiritual power in the human body] has yin and yang energies.

“The rose quartz, which is pink, connects to the yin, while green crystals connect to the yang energy, which is the masculine energy commonly found in green colour.

“People don’t know, but Amazonite is also connected to the heart chakra.”

3. Massage stress away

“Have a favourite crystal as a ‘worry stone’, massage object or for brainstorming on your desk, workstation or even the dashboard of your car,” LeBard says.

“Keep a favourite crystal on hand to deflect negative energy is a great way to manage workplace stress, quieten the mind and get creative when brainstorming new ideas.”
