Singapore’s newly opened Jewel Changi Airport – a mixed-use development at the city state’s Changi Airport – has set a new standard for all airports by taking the retail experience to a whole new level, with over 280 shops and restaurants in the 10-storey mall.

There’s no doubt Changi is going to walk away with another “best airport in the world” title, as the mall seamlessly blends nature and technology, resulting in a highly Instagrammable monolith.

Check out these eight not-to-be-missed attractions at Jewel Changi Airport.

HSBC Rain Vortex

The centrepiece within the sparkling glass dome that encases Jewel Changi, this 40-metre (130-foot) high waterfall is a literal oasis in the middle of the sprawling terminal.

Surrounded by terraced, lush, tropical foliage reminiscent of Gardens by the Bay, rainwater is collected, before being dispersed by the waterfall to water the plants around it.

Boasting one of the largest indoor collections of plants, this is the perfect place to chill out, especially if you’re in transit – Jewel is connected to all the airport terminals – or if you want to take a break from shopping.

The waterfall alternates between showering water and mist, so you may get a little wet if you stand by the railing.

Each night, from 7.30pm to 9.30pm, there’s an enchanting music and light show.

Canopy Park

Head to Level Five for family-friendly fun, with beautifully arranged flower sculptures of local fauna, a colourful garden, and mini “valleys” from which mist pours forth.

The fifth floor provides panoramic views of the waterfall and terraces, so have your cameras ready.

We were excited to see the Bouncing and Walking Nets, one of the largest indoor nets in the world, which cover the sides of the glass dome, as well as the Discovery Slides, which sit on top of a reflective art installation.

However, these will open only in June, along with the Hedge and Mirror Mazes and the suspended, glass-bottomed, Canopy Bridge.

Eat:

Shake Shack

This has been a long time coming – fans of the New York burger chain have been waiting for it to land on The Little Red Dot’s shores.

Bid farewell to your diet, with Singapore-exclusive dessert and drink offerings such as the Pandan Shake, Jewela Melaka Concrete and The Shack Attack Concrete.

Signature dishes such as the Shack Burger and Shack-Cargo Dog will also be available at this two-storey outlet, which will also sell merchandise.

Burger & Lobster

Opening in May, London’s most popular lobster restaurant finally arrives in Singapore, with a prime location on Jewel’s Canopy floor, and a great view of the waterfall.

We had a sneak peek (or taste) of the signature Original Lobster Roll, and can attest it’s just as good as the original.

Beauty In The Pot

Hotpot is a way of life in Asia, so it makes sense that local food chain, Beauty in the Pot, has an outlet at Jewel.

We recommend the Signature Beauty Collagen Broth and the silky, koi-shaped home-made Fish Tofu. What’s more, there’s space for storing luggage, and it’s open until 6am – perfect for easing those painful red-eye layovers.

Shop:

Pokemon Centre

In another first for Singapore and the world, Jewel Changi Airport hosts the first Pokemon Centre outside Japan, with Singapore-exclusive merchandise.

There were long lines as fans queuing up to get their hands on one of six exclusive items, such as pilot and flight attendant Pikachu plushies or a Pokemon-covered box of Peranakan Cookies.

You know what they say, gotta’ catch ‘em all.

In Good Company

This popular Singaporean clothing brand launches its third stand-alone outlet with an elegant lifestyle concept store, that also houses a Birds of Paradise Gelato Boutique.

The Jewel Changi Airport store is the first to house its men’s, women’s and children’s clothing in one space, as well as geometric jewellery inspired by American artist Richard Serra.

It also stocks locally produced lifestyle products, such as Fossa Chocolate and X candles.

After you’re done shopping, treat yourself to a scoop of White Chrysanthemum or Spice, in one of Birds of Paradise’s signature thyme cones.
