STYLE Edit: Saint Laurent’s summer line of bags are a mark of sophistication

High fashion handbag innovator has created a subtle Monogram All Over line in lavish coloured leathers
Paris Fashion Week would have been incomplete without Anthony Vaccarello’s homage to maison founder Yves Saint Laurent in the Saint Laurent spring/summer 2019 collection.
Accessories were deliberately restrained on the runway, but our curiosity was piqued by the new summer line, the Monogram All Over. A sophisticatedly retro Satchel, Seau and Camera Bag make up the ensemble, in colour variations of black and burgundy.
The line consists of an all-over monogrammed exterior, but done subtly. Saint Laurent is embossed on aged suede, with shiny calfskin leather detailing for textural contrast.
The leather embossing comes from an ancient technique of hot stamping with engraved plates before being washed to create a slightly worn, vintage effect. The calfskin leather detail, too, was stamped with a faint cross-hatch, giving the material a unique look as well as better resistance against the elements.
The Satchel, inspired by a design from the maison’s ‘40s archives, has an old-time leather strap passing through an engraved light-bronze buckle. A profile view of the Satchel showcases its accordion gussets, hinting at the two compartments inside.
The light bronze hardware – on all Saint Laurent Monogram All Over bags – is hand finished and reworked to give that cohesive vintage feel.
Another stand-out bag from the summer collection is the new Le 61, which has been seen on the arms of Kate Moss and Lexie Liu.
