STYLE Edit: Marvel comic book artist Stan Lee’s paintings to be auctioned in Hong Kong

Rare comic covers on canvas are among 300 artworks, such as items by Chinese classical painter Wu Guanzhong, to be offered for sale by Holly’s International on May 27
Auction house Holly’s International will be hosting its first auction in Hong Kong from May 25 to 27 at the Grand Ballroom, Grand Hyatt Hong Kong in Wan Chai.
More than 300 art pieces will be going under the hammer, including Chinese classical paintings, calligraphy, modern art, Chinese ceramics and jewellery.
Previews for the auction take place on May 25 and 26, from 10am to 8pm, while the auction itself, featuring nine sessions, will be held on May 27, from 11am.
The auction house’s Department of Chinese Classical Paintings and Chinese Calligraphy is offering two special collection sessions, including “The Origin of Ink: Chinese Painting and Calligraphy”.
The Origin of Ink collection features three themes, most notably “Xi An Cao Tang – Family Collections of C.C. Wang”, which showcases pieces from C.C. Wang, a pioneer collector of Chinese classical paintings and calligraphy.
In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of artist Wu Guanzhong, a leading oil painter and Chinese classical painter, the Department of Modern and Contemporary Arts will offer numerous water-ink works by the artist under the theme, “Delightful Hong Kong: Important Private Collection of Wu Guanzhong from Singapore”.
The department will also host two other special event sessions during the auction, “Future +: Special Sale of Shen Qin’s Upcoming Works” and “Exposure of Inspirations: Modern and Contemporary Art”, which features a rare set of comic cover paintings on canvas by Stan Lee, the late American comic artist.
The series of 12 paintings, titled “The Comic Series of Marvels Cover” – autographed by the artist – has an estimated value of HK$2.4 million (US$306,000) to HK$3.2 million.
