For US$65 million, you could find yourself the new owner of an American island property once owned by former United States first lady Jackie Kennedy.
The late wife of US President John F. Kennedy – who was assassinated while in office in 1963 – bought Red Gate Farm, in Aquinnah, on Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, in 1979, four years after the death of her second husband, the Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis.
She spent her summers at the property, which is now being sold by her daughter, Caroline Kennedy.
Kennedy Onassis bought the property for about US$1 million. At the time, the only building on the estate was the hunting cabin.
In 1981, architect Hugh Newell Jacobsen designed both the 6,456 square-foot (600 square-metre) main house and the guest house.
Kennedy Onassis died at the age of 64 in 1994. In 2000, Caroline Kennedy renovated and expanded the main house with the help of Deborah Berke, dean of the Yale School of Architecture.
The 340-acre (138-hectare) estate also includes a hunting cabin, barn, boathouse, storage building, and two garages.
Its amenities include more than a mile (1.6km) of private beachfront, a swimming pool, tennis court, exercise studio, vegetable garden and blueberry patch.
