If this year’s summer blockbusters haven’t blown your mind – which is pretty likely when a lacklustre Toy Story sequel and an Iron Man-less Spider-Man movie are among the best of the bunch – it’s time to turn your gaze back to the small screen.
Thankfully, Netflix has got everyone’s back. As August hits, there’s a raft of shows coming your way to provide entertainment and keep you glued to your couch. Sure, we should all probably get up and do some exercise, but it’s summer out there. Who wants to go outside anyway?

Here are our five picks for the best new shows on Netflix this month.
Wu Assassins
One of the most anticipated new Netflix shows of the summer is this martial arts fantasy helmed by Hong Kong’s Stephen Fung – director of action flicks like Enter the Phoenix (2004) and Tai Chi 0 (2012). Arguably even more exciting is the fact that Iko Uwais, who blew audiences away with his martial arts prowess and stunts in The Raid films, stars as an aspiring chef granted special powers to combat an evil triad clan. If Fung and Uwais bring their A-game, this has the potential to be one of the best action series in years.

Glow (season 3)
The Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling return for another outing. Based on the true story of an all-female wrestling promotion in ’80s Los Angeles (though the action moves to Las Vegas in this season), the series provides an insider’s view of the pro-wrestling world and all its shenanigans, while examining the fallout of the 1970s woman’s liberation movement, what it means to find yourself and the demands of pursuing something you believe in.

The Naked Director
Another series based on a true story, The Naked Director showcases the life of Japanese (adult) filmmaker Toru Muranishi. Set during the glory days of the Japanese “bubble” economy of the 1980s, and featuring all the excess you’d imagine of that era, this comedy chronicles Muranishi’s rise to fame and how he revolutionised the Japanese porn industry after being fired from his job and discovering that his wife was having an affair.

Dear White People (season 3)
As timely as ever, Dear White People follows the travails of a group of black students attending a mostly white Ivy League university and the many issues they face there. Star of the show is Samantha White (Logan Browning), a woke student who has achieved self-actualisation and seeks to raise awareness of racial issues on campus.

Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac
A hugely popular anime back in the day, Saint Seiya is getting a reboot on Netflix with this Knights of the Zodiac series. CG-animated this time out, this reboot tells the story of Seiya, a young boy looking for his lost sister, chosen to defend the goddess Athena and to do battle with the evil Vander Guraad. The originator of many classic anime tropes, old fans should find something new to like in this reinterpretation while new fans should finally get to see what all the fuss is about.
