STYLE Edit: Shanghai Tang unveils playful eyewear ‘Through a Chinese Lens’

Shanghai Tang’s unisex range, ‘Through a Chinese Lens’, encompasses modern Chinese looks and its own playful brand visuals.

Looking for a “Shou-stopping” pair of sunnies? Shanghai Tang imbues its signature style in a new range of sunglasses this summer. Titled “Through a Chinese Lens”, the unisex range encompasses modern Chinese looks and Shanghai Tang’s playful brand visuals.

Shanghai Tang’s signature style can be seen in an all-new sunglasses range called ‘Through a Chinese Lens’, this summer.

The Chinese “Shou” symbol, signifying longevity, is an established Shanghai Tang emblem. One of the 12 designs for the eyewear collection, aptly named the Shou, offers an engraved pattern of the character motif on the temple hardware.

This cheerful touch has been carried into other face-flattering eyewear shapes, as well as distinctive frames that we’ve not seen before.

STYLE Edit: How Xu Bing etches Shanghai Tang’s vision

The Pollen is probably the most avant-garde pair of sunglasses in the collection, with an angular shape inspired by butterfly wings.

Drawing from its ready-to-wear collection, Shanghai Tang takes its statement contrast piping and translates the trim into eyewear design. To achieve that signature definition, lightweight stainless steel is hand-painted using a lasering technique that gives an intense and durable colour.

In styles such as the Feather Horn and Spotlight, the stainless steel wire is layered or inset in acetate frames, offering a special pop of colour on classic designs.

In others, the painted steel is given centre stage for a dramatic, modern effect. The contrasting matt or metallic coating on the top bar of the Fei aviators or The Agent gives a touch of idiosyncrasy to its relatively neutral frame.

All 12 sunnies offer 100 per cent UV protection and, for those who consider the full package, one’s sunglasses box is available in a choice of fuchsia, orange, blue or purple.
