A female Muslim superhero Kamala Khan is coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

The live-action Ms. Marvel television series is ‘in the works’ for Disney’s forthcoming streaming service, Disney Plus, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Disney Plus will launch on November 12.

Several other MCU series are being developed for the service with actors from the films reprising their roles, including The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision, Hawkeye, Loki, and an animated series, What If?, which will tell alternative versions of MCU stories.

Is Avengers: Endgame the highest-grossing movie ever made?

Khan is a teenage, Pakistani-American Muslim superhero who was introduced in Marvel Comics in 2013.

Carol Danvers, played by actress Brie Larson in the MCU, used to be known as Ms. Marvel in the comics. After Danvers dons the mantle of Captain Marvel in the comics, Khan calls herself Ms. Marvel.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has prioritised diversity in future projects. The MCU will also introduce its first Asian superhero to headline a solo film in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

“When you have diverse voices, you get better stories and you get more exciting stories, you get more surprising stories,” Feige told Variety last year. “And that is something that is very clear.”

Feige said in May last year, during the filming of Captain Marvel, that plans were “in the works” to introduce Ms. Marvel to the MCU.

“We’re doing Captain Marvel … with Brie Larson,” he told the BBC at the time.

“Ms. Marvel, which is another character in the comic books – the Muslim hero who is inspired by Captain Marvel – is definitely sort of in the works. We have plans for that once we introduce Captain Marvel to the world.”

In February, Larson also told a press conference in Singapore to promote Captain Marvel that she was interested in the character of Khan/Ms. Marvel being included in the sequel to the film.

“My dream would be that Ms. Marvel gets to come into play,” Larson said in a report in Britain’s Daily Express.

It is unlikely that the television series will be seen for another couple of years.

The first Disney Plus Marvel series, The Falcon and Winter Soldier, debuts in late 2020.
