Taylor Swift, Jennifer Aniston, Adele, Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus all made headlines in 2019 – and not necessarily for the right reasons.

The year 2019 has been one of drama, drama, and more drama. Read on to find the 10 biggest celebrity scandals that rocked the entertainment world.

1. Tristan Thompson cheats on Khloé Kardashian – with her sister’s best friend

When Tristan Thompson cheated on girlfriend Khloé Kardashian with Jordyn Woods, there was an ugly twist to the story – Jordyn was the best friend of Khloé’s sister, Kylie Jenner. They were friends for seven years, going everywhere together, and they even got matching tattoos. But when Thompson, who has a baby with Kardashian, “hooked up” with Woods in February 2019, their seven-year friendship came to an abrupt end.

2. R. Kelly’s sexual abuse

The R&B star’s scandal began just days into 2019. In January, American TV channel Lifetime aired Surviving R. Kelly, a docu-series that investigated R. Kelly’s alleged sexual misconduct with underage girls, as well as shocking reports that he kept women in his house as sex slaves. He was later indicted on 10 counts of aggravated sexual abuse, some of which involved girls as young as 13, and he is currently in jail awaiting his 2020 trial.

3. Wendy Williams’ divorce

In April, the well-known talk show host filed for divorce from her husband, Kevin Hunter, to whom she’d been married for 22 years. He had reportedly had an affair with another woman, Sharina Hudson – which resulted in a baby. Wendy was quoted as saying, “Infidelity is one thing, a full baby is a whole other topic.” It later came to light that Hunter and Hudson had been having an affair for years by that point.

4. Adele’s divorce

The 31-year-old British singer is famed for her heartfelt love songs, but her own love story came to a sudden end this year. She filed for divorce from her husband, Simon Konecki, with whom she has a child. They took pains to keep their relationship under wraps for the eight years they were together, and Adele didn’t even confirm their marriage until a year after it happened. Maybe that’s why the news of their split was such a shock – fans were still getting used to the idea of them being together.

5. Jussie Smollett’s fake hate crime

In January, the African-American star of the Fox series Empire claimed he was jumped by two men, who shouted racial slurs at him and poured bleach on him. The police treated it as a hate crime. Except it was fake – as an investigation revealed, the actor paid the two men US$3,500 to attack him. He even sent a threatening letter to himself before the attack. Smollett is now facing up to three years in prison, and he will no longer appear on Empire.

6. Taylor Swift blasts ex Tom Hiddleston

Taylor Swift dated the Avengers hunk for three months back in 2016, but it seems the pop star isn’t finished reminiscing. One of the reasons for their split was that Hiddleston was reportedly “bored” with Swift, and in her April 2019 comeback song Me!, the singer seems to make a dig at this quote, singing, “I will never bore you, baby … there are a lot of lame guys out there”.

She also includes references to her former beau’s fluency in French, and another line, “Trouble’s gonna follow where I go,” echoes quotes from a GQ interview with the actor. As for Hiddleston, he hasn’t commented on the song, but it’s safe to say it probably isn’t on his playlist.

7. Jennifer Aniston’s cocaine debacle

When she posted her first photo to Instagram in October 2019, Aniston made more of a splash than she presumably intended to. She took a selfie featuring herself surrounded by her former Friends castmates … but also visible in the picture were some white spots on the back of a phone laying on a nearby table. Viewers immediately began speculating that these white marks were queues of cocaine. The star’s reps responded with claims that it was not an illegal substance, but merely “a reflection of an overhead light fixture”.

8. Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth split

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth dated on and off for 10 years, but after officially tying the knot in December 2018, they split only eight months later, in August 2019. Both sides were busy blaming the other – sources from Cyrus’ side claimed that Hemsworth’s drug use was what ended the marriage, while the actor’s own sources blamed the singer’s infidelity. Only a day after the break-up was announced, Cyrus was spotted in Italy kissing her new girl, Kaitlynn Carter. But that relationship, too, was short-lived, and Cyrus has since been linked to Cody Simpson.

9. Lori Loughlin’s college admissions scandal

When Full House actress Lori Loughlin was accused, in March 2019, of bribing her daughter’s way into college, the nation was shocked. Felicity Huffman, another actress who took part in college bribery, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to only two weeks in prison, but Loughlin may be facing a longer sentence. She and her husband pleaded not guilty, and the couple have also been charged with conspiring to commit fraud and money laundering, which may carry combined sentences of up to 50 years.

10. Jeffrey Epstein’s ‘suicide’

Jeffrey Epstein was a well-known money manager who was accused by dozens of women and girls of sexual abuse. He died in jail in August 2019, and though his death was officially deemed a suicide, a pathologist pointed to signs of a homicide. Speculations abound that he may have been planning to name powerful associates in exchange for a lighter sentence – and that he was deemed too dangerous to let live.

With all of these unexpected scandals in the past year, it seems unlikely that anything can surprise us any more – but who knows what 2020 has in store.
