Celebrities from Cynthia Nixon to Lin-Manuel Miranda are just an Oscar away from becoming an EGOT – winning the royal flush of an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony

Dubbed “the Grand Slam” of American entertainment, being named an EGOT (an acronym for winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony) is reserved only for Hollywood’s most talented – a versatile breed of performers who have excelled and made a mark across television, music, film and theatre.

Winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar or a Tony is a huge recognition in itself, but clinching all four titles is a game changer, and spells commendable all-round success in the entertainment industry. A rare and elusive title – so far only 15 veteran entertainers have achieved the EGOT title, including Whoopi Goldberg, Mel Brooks, Audrey Hepburn, Rita Moreno, and recently, John Legend, who won an Emmy in 2018.

In the 80s, Miami Vice actor Philip Michael Thomas aspired to win all four titles, according to Vanity Fair. During the show’s heyday, he wore a gold medallion emblazoned with the letters EGOT to remind him of his goals.

Decades have passed and Thomas hasn’t won any of the said honours. Like Thomas, there are many performers, especially those who are one award away, who have the same ambition to gain all of these in their lifetime. In the aftermath of this year’s Oscars, we list the actors who only need to win the “O” to join the ego-driven EGOT club.

Cynthia Nixon

The Sex and the City alum earned two Tonys for her role in Rabbit Hole (2006) and The Little Foxes (2017). But sadly, she wasn’t a part of the 2010 film adaptation of Rabbit Hole, which landed Nicole Kidman an Oscar nod. Film critics have applauded her performance in the 2015 drama James White, but she did not get any nomination.

Hugh Jackman

Last year, Hugh Jackman won a Grammy for best compilation soundtrack for visual media (as a producer) along with The Greatest Showman team. He only lacks the “O” to become a member of the prestigious EGOT club.
