Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele’s new capsule collection makes use of design elements from 70s psychedelia to continue exploration of house codes

Alessandro Michele is no stranger to logomania. From his debut collection in 2015, when he refreshed the iconic GG Marmont belt, to today’s pieces that pop with an overlapping Flora pattern on monogram canvas, Gucci’s creative director is anything but shy about his house codes.

But, if the Gucci Marmont belt of 2015 was putting out feelers about in-your-face status symbols, the GG Psychedelic collection is well and truly feeling it.

Like a stylish, lush-haired crow, Michele collects design elements from 70s psychedelia for the new capsule collection. Foremost, there is the inescapable, kaleidoscopic print; the new GG motif is reinterpreted with a pattern of multicoloured stars. Black underlies the collection’s Psychedelic print, but only for the rest of the crazy colours to pop off.

The print appears all over women’s ready-to-wear pieces – in silk and jersey mostly, as well as knitwear. Exuding streetwear vibes, a dress features a drawstring waist, a key detail of the season.

For men, Michele communicates the same message of confident, colourful streetwear. But the men’s ready-to-wear pieces are notably sportier, with a technical jersey tracksuit punctuated with piping detail, a funky swimsuit, or an audacious bowling set consisting of a loose shirt and short trousers.

Harking back to the psychedelic era’s rock heritage, a guitar case has been made with the new GG monogram. The capsule collection also revisits luggage pieces from the Cruise 2020 collection, with the motley print and pops of black, green or pink leather trim.

If you’d prefer to just dip your toes into this colourful capsule collection, there are rubber slides, slip-ons and Ace low-top sneakers decorated in the print, as well as a new high-top version of the Ace sneaker for men.
