Coronavirus means galleries are shut – but you can visit New York’s MoMA, Paris’ Louvre, or 500 more of the world’s best museums online

If you are done to death with Netflix (and chilling?), maybe it’s time you explored art by being smart. Thanks to Google Arts & Culture you can now view some of the best and most celebrated art the world has to offer from the confines of your humble abode.

So while there’s sadly no sign of coronavirus leaving us any time soon, instead of being hapless inside let’s make the most of technology, with the chance to virtually dip into many of the most pre-eminent art collections on the planet.

You read that right, no matter how far you feel from your peeps and peers thanks to social distancing, your love for art doesn’t have to suffer. In fact, the world of art just got a lot smaller as you can now virtually tour more than museums and galleries from your couch.

It works rather wonderfully; clicking on each attraction will bring up images of some of the museum or gallery’s collection, and in some cases, full virtual tours of the museum are available which makes you feel like you’re present right there. The list includes some big names like the Louvre in Paris, the Palace of Versailles and New York’s MoMA, which has tours including stops with iconic artists Matisse and Picasso.

 

With most museums and galleries in Italy shut until at least April, several storied institutions in the country’s northern hub of Milan are listed, including the historic Biblioteca Ambrosiana, the city’s Sforza Castle and the Museo del Novecento. Google’s interior street view can be used to wander in gallery halls.

So, staying at home doesn’t have to be the worst thing to happen to you. A host of art and culture awaits you a computer away.
