A peek inside Prince’s Beverly Hills purple mansion, listed for US$29.9 million

Behind this luxurious mansion lies a unique story between NBA-star Carlos Boozer and the late music icon Prince. Photo: The Oppenheim Group

In 2005, the late music legend Prince commissioned one of Los Angeles’s most scandalous paint jobs. He ordered the Beverly Hills mansion he rented to be painted with purple stripes, his signature colour, much to the dismay of his neighbours.

The luxurious estate was once the home of American movie legend Elizabeth Taylor, and, when Prince rented it, was owned by NBA star Carlos Boozer. The 18,000 sq ft property is now on the market for US$29.995 million. Besides its grand splendour, the mansion comes with a unique backstory.

Built in 1953, Boozer bought the property in 2004, and subsequently rented it to Prince. The pop star added his signature flair, adding purple striped walls and purple carpets inside and outside the home. He also transformed Boozer's weight room into a disco room and bedrooms into hair salons and massage parlours. Upon the change, Boozer threatened to sue; however, Prince returned everything to its original state after he moved out, and the two remained close friends until the musician's death on April 21, 2016.

Why aren’t Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton neighbours any more?

The mansion comprises two houses; the main one of around 15,101 sq ft and an English Tudor-style home of 3,300 sq ft, plus two additional parcels, making up 2.15 acres of land.
