Tom Cruise in Italy, Matt Damon in Ireland, Gordon Ramsay in Cornwall – where celebrities are stranded or self-isolating during Covid-19

Through choice or luck the rich and famous are living out coronavirus quarantines in more memorable locations than most of us – so who escaped to the Caribbean, and which A-lister got stranded in New Mexico?
With swathes of the world in lockdown many celebrities have found themselves displaced overseas or have intentionally left their homes for less urban locations. Just before Italy’s lockdown Tom Cruise was said to be “trapped” at the luxurious The Gritti Palace hotel when Paramount announced a shoot in Venice for Mission: Impossible 7 had been postponed. Cruise’s agent however stated that he had not arrived in Venice at the time of the announcement so chances are he’s not currently there gorging on room service, after all. But here are the celebrities we know are away from home:
Matt Damon in Ireland
The film star has been spotted in Dalkey, an upmarket seaside suburb near Dublin. Damon – who incidentally starred in post-Sars outbreak thriller Contagion – had been filming Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel when the lockdown began. Before social distancing, locals reported seeing Damon jogging, and he posed with cafe and restaurant owners for photos. A picture of the actor with a supermarket carrier bag was widely shared on social media prompting many humorous tweets from locals – though an attempt by a New York Times journalist to gain inside information from residents was met with disdain. Clearly what happens in Dalkey, stays in Dalkey.
Idris Elba in New Mexico
The British actor tested positive for Covid-19 while shooting a Netflix film in Santa Fe. Taking to Twitter on March 31, Elba said of himself and his wife Sabrina, who also contracted the coronavirus, “We’re stuck in limbo. We can’t get a flight back home so we just have to sit still for a little bit.” From the One World Together at Home concert on April 18 the couple appeared to still be in New Mexico.
