Girl group stans, this one’s for you. Last month’s reputation rankings revealed Loona, (G) I-dle and Itzy making a strong presence, as they slowly crept into top spots, joining chart regulars Blackpink, Red Velvet and Twice.

With smashing performances, lyrics on self-love and members each with a powerful charm of her own – if you aren’t on the ship yet – these are the girl groups worth following.

Loona

Loona has finally landed. After what seemed like eons, the dozen-member band has recently just won its first music award, landing first place with their latest song, So What. The much-awaited feat can be credited to Loona’s hard work and years-long preparations.

In order to showcase their individual charms and talents, Loona, whose band name literally translates to “girl of the month”, was introduced through a year-and-a-half-long pre-debut concept, with one member debuting per month, and then forming sub-units (Loona 1/3, Odd Eye Circle, and yyxy), before all 12 members (Haseul, Vivi, Yves, JinSoul, Kim Lip, Chuu, Heejin, Hyunjin, Go Won, Choerry, Olivia Hye and Yeojin) finally performed together.

From the first member’s debut in October 2016, Loona finally performed as one with their single Favourite and title track Hi High in August 2018.

(G) I-dle

Composed of three Koreans (Soyeon, Miyeon and Soojin), one Thai (Minnie), one Taiwanese (Shuahua) and one Chinese member (Yuqi), (G) I-dle’s multi-nationality only adds spice to the group’s colourful vibe. The band sets themselves apart by being heavily involved in every phase of their performance, from songwriting to choreography, to the concept and their visuals, powered by each member’s diverse musical background, training and influence.

Unlike most girl groups in their generation, (G) I-dle’s songs are self-produced, with leader Soyeon writing lyrics based on her members’ vocal strengths. Their debut song Latata was an strong first release, topping iTunes charts in 10 countries and entered Billboard’s world digital songs chart at number 11. This was followed by their second EP called “I Made” featuring lead single Senorita.

Itzy

If you’ve seen Korean idols mimicking a shoulder dance that’s catchy and tempting to copy, blame it on Itzy’s latest song, Wannabe. A self-embracing tune on being yourself. Itzy’s comeback with Wannabe arrives with stronger visuals, spot on choreography and their cool girl vibe.

Blackpink vs Twice: this summer’s battle of K-pop’s top girl bands

The band had only debuted in February last year and has stolen the spotlight since. Formed by JYP Entertainment (the company behind Wonder Girls and Twice), Yeji, Lia, Ryujin, Chaeryeong and Yuna come together as a strong force with their own brand of girl power.

Their debut track, Dalla Dalla is a fusion of EDM, house and hip-hop, and was such a breakthrough hit, earning Itzy the crown for having the most views on their debut music video. Surpassing 17 million views in just 24 hours, the video concludes with Itzy’s signature ending pose, with the members rightfully putting crowns on themselves.
