Netflix’s Next in Fashion may be cancelled, but British fashion icon Alexa Chung is still in demand – just don’t call her a model

Alexa Chung is indisputably the modern definition of an ‘it girl’ – but what makes her tick? Photo: @alexachung/Instagram

Saying that Alexa Chung is an all-around “it girl” does not even cover half of her awesomeness. She made her debut on British TV in 2006 when she presented a show called Popworld, and the rest, as they say, is history.

In normal, pre-corona times, the 36-year-old was a staple at every fashion week, muse to many leading designers, contributor to glossy magazines, and presenter of fashion TV shows (hello, Next in Fashion). Her quirky yet effortless style combined with stunning good looks have made her a leading fashion crush for almost 15 years.

Just don't call her a model – or a DJ

When you're Alexa Chung, you're not a model, nor a DJ; you transcend beyond. Before an interview, her publicist insisted that she not be called either of those terms, but instead, one of the following: global style icon, trendsetter, fashion designer, esteemed television personality or author. Well, if you insist.

A new calling?

To add to her long list of talents, Chung loves to doodle and sketch. During the lockdown in London, she’s had plenty of time to practice.

She’s a fashion icon, so it’s no wonder she has her own fashion line

How could she not? The fashion world loves Chung for being able to casually wear vintage pieces, not to mention making jeans look couture. You can find her eponymous clothing line on her website. She says of the brand: “combining Parisian chic with a New York edge, as well as the very British sense of humour, it is inspired by everything from Jane Birkin’s insouciance to David Hockney’s stripy sweater.”

She gets intense sound rage

If you're following her on Instagram or Twitter, you're in for some really funny and outrageous posts from memes to small titbits about her. She once tweeted that she gets intense rage from the sound of chewing, crunching, and indeed any sounds related to digestion. Don’t eat around her!

She's short — in model terms

Though her slimline frame makes her look like she's taller than she is. At 5 feet 8 inches (1.73 metres) she is the same height as fellow British cool girl Cara Delevingne, both of whom are considered short when it comes to the catwalk. Though now, you can have five-foot, three-inch models like Lily-Rose Depp.

She has had her fair share of Hollywood bloopers

Chung may have been sort of banned from doing any other red carpet interviews, because of her infamous Cubans mishap. If you haven't heard, she was talking about Olivia Wilde on the Golden Globes red carpet and said, “Olivia Wilde, another person that looks beautiful tonight, there she was in a gorgeous gown, huge skirt so large in fact that you can probably smuggle three humans in under that thing.” But instead of humans, it sounded like Cubans … Whoops.

She’s loyal to her hairstylist

If there is one thing consistent about her over the years, it has been her fab hair. It's even been called “Don’t Care Good Hair”, and it is all thanks to celebrity stylist George Northwood, Chung said in a Vogue interview.

She is 3/8 Chinese and 5/8 English, according to her Twitter feed, possibly trying to move the conversation along for once and for all.
