When K-pop fans become ‘sasaeng’ fans – and start stalking their idols from bands like EXO, BTS, Girls’ Generation and BigBang

EXO’s Tao and Baekhyun and BigBang’s T.O.P have all been targeted by obsessive fans, while Girls’ Generation’s Taeyeon was the subject of a kidnapping attempt – so what happens when ‘sasaeng’ fans go too far?
For K-pop idols, connecting with their fans is important – it’s a way for them to build a relationship with their fans and thank them for their support. Often, idols will give their fans a peek into their personal lives through live social media sessions or online chat groups.
But what happens when fans want to get even closer and start invading idols’ privacy by stalking or even trying to kidnap them? These are called “sasaeng” fans – fans who resort to stalking to get closer to their idols.
We take a look at some K-pop stars who have been targeted by “sasaeng” fans.
EXO’s Baekhyun
In a recent message posted on the LYSN app, Baekhyun of EXO pleaded with his fans to respect his privacy after he came home and found two fans waiting in front of his apartment.
“Two female individuals (sasaengs) were just in front of our house and floor after I finished my schedules … Thankfully I was with my manager. But during that moment I was scared … I’m begging you. Please protect my privacy,” the message read.
EXO’s Tao
It hasn’t only been Baekhyun who has been targeted. During an overseas trip, fans of EXO were able to make their way into the group’s hotel and photographed Tao coming in and out of his hotel room in a dressing gown. They reportedly installed microphones in the members’ rooms and were able to catch Tao singing to G-Dragon’s song, Crayon.
Girls’ Generation’s Taeyeon
