As tattoos are still considered as taboo in society, can you imagine royals being inked? Blue bloods have a strict protocol when maintaining an elegant and polished appearance – however, we reveal five European royals who bent the rules and dared to bare their body art.

Dubbed a fashionista and “it” girl on and off the catwalk, Lady Amelia Windsor is no ordinary royal. Lady Amelia is the granddaughter of the queen’s cousin, Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, and is 39th in line to the throne – meaning she could get away with experimenting with rebellious expressions. She has tattoos on her wrists including three bear cubs, a tiger on her left shoulder blade and a petal on her rib cage.

Princess Sofia of Sweden

Meghan Markle was not the first TV star who snatched a prince’s heart – Sofia Kristina Hellqvist married Prince Carl Philip, who is fourth in line to the Swedish throne, in 2015.

Before her princess diaries began, she was a glamour model and reality TV star – so even on her wedding day, she wasn’t shy to flaunt a part of her, which was a fully-displayed sunburst tattoo on her upper back. Plus, she has a large butterfly on her rib cage and a mini motif on her ankle.

Crown Prince Frederick of Denmark

Crown Prince Frederick was inspired by his tatted grandfather, King Frederik IX. During his navy service, the king got multiple tattoos on his arms and torso embodying birds and a dragon.

And his grandson Prince Frederick went for two: a shark on his lower leg, representing an emblem of the special operations force, the Frogman Corps, and one on his right bicep referring to his nickname “Pingo”, which he earned when he became a badged-frogman.

Princess Stéphanie of Monaco

Princess Stéphanie, the youngest daughter of film and style icon Grace Kelly, has established her own sense of grace. After her mother passed away, the princess said her rebelling during her youth helped her cope with her mother’s death. An avid tattoo lover, she has a tattooed ring, sun bracelet and three dolphins on her left foot. And keeping the best for last – she has a sleek dragon motif on her back, making her the real “girl with the dragon tattoo”.

Pauline Ducruet

Like mother, like daughter – fashion designer Pauline Ducruet followed her mum’s rebellious ways. But unlike Princess Stéphanie, Pauline went for more minimalist designs. As seen on her Instagram account, she has a flower and cursive-phrase motif on her right forearm.
