Her majesty has amassed perhaps the finest jewellery collection in the world, mostly gifted by other royals and heads of state, but is she sending out subtle messages when deciding which ones to wear?

Queen Elizabeth owns some of the world’s most important jewels and her collection continues to grow, thanks to the generosity of the world’s rich and famous. During important state visits with world leaders – such as last year’s meeting with US President Donald Trump – or with fellow royal families around the world, the queen wears jewels gifted to her by these parties to express goodwill.

Diplomatic gifts from world leaders and fellow royals become a part of the crown jewel collection; the queen has access to these pieces and can authorise loans to other members of the royal family.

From important gemstones and statement necklaces, here are some of the most spectacular gifts presented to the queen over the years.

King Faisal of Saudi Arabia necklace

On a visit to the UK, King Faisal of Saudi Arabia gifted the queen a diamond necklace from Harry Winston. The design features more than 300 diamonds with a total weight of 80 carats. The necklace is a favourite of hers and she’s worn it during official engagements with the Saudis on numerous occasions.
