Since online social networks have become integral to everyday life, year after year new platforms have emerged, each aiming to be the next big thing. Stand-outs rise in popularity, vying for users’ attention and activity and even contending with heavyweights such as Facebook, Instagram and TikTok , while the less successful eventually fade into obscurity. Chingari, a short video sharing mobile app developed in India, is well-positioned to be the next tech success story, with a sudden influx of more than 15 million new user downloads after TikTok was banned by the Indian government. He went on to explain that a definite goal is to focus on India’s so-called tier two and tier three towns, which are settlements with fewer than 100,000 or 50,000 inhabitants respectively. Overnight success Although Chingari achieved overnight success in 2020, it was actually launched two years ago. The home-grown social media app gained real traction when India’s government banned China-owned TikTok. Since the controversy surrounding the competitor app earlier this year, Chingari’s downloads soared. Overseas role models Software developer and magnate Bill Gates is an obvious inspiration for Ghosh, whose office features a large mural of Gates gracing one of the walls.
