Who wore it best at Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’ inauguration ceremony? Melania Trump said goodbye in Chanel and Dolce & Gabbana while Lady Gaga donned bespoke Schiaparelli haute couture

- J.Lo sported an all-white Chanel look while first lady Jill Biden’s blue Markarian ensemble symbolised trust
- Michelle Obama and Vice-President Kamala Harris both rocked outfits by Sergio Hudson
First lady Jill Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris were joined by celebrities including Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez – all dolled up in glamorous outfits filled with symbolic meaning. So who dressed the best at the new administration’s official sartorial debut?

Jill Biden was outfitted in a blue Markarian ensemble by independent American designer Alexandra O‘Neill while accompanying her husband in front of the US Capitol. According to the brand, the design features a mix of shades of blue velvet, blue tweed, silk and chiffon to “signify trust, confidence and stability”. She also wore a matching mask by the designer.

Kamala Harris, the first female, black and Asian-American to fill the second-highest position in US office, chose to wear a striking purple ensemble by two black designers, Christopher John Rogers and Sergio Hudson. Some think that the outfit was selected because purple represents unity as well as being a mix of Democrat blue and Republican red. She accessorised it with her signature pearl jewellery.

Pop singer and actress Lady Gaga – who campaigned for Biden previously – sang the US national anthem at the inauguration ceremony and wore bespoke Schiaparelli haute couture conceived of by the house’s creative director, American designer Daniel Roseberry. The look comprised a fitted jacket in navy cashmere and a skirt in washed red silk faille with a gilded dove of peace brooch.

Jennifer Lopez donned head-to-toe white Chanel while performing This Land Is Your Land and America the Beautiful – a colour that is traditionally linked with suffragettes.
