Two weeks have passed since Rex Tso’s victory over his Japanese opponent and two-time WBA world champion, Kohei Kono.

Now that he is free from training, the Hong Kong boxer does what he has always done when having time off – taking a good rest. “Having time on your own is very important to an athlete, because you need to rest to recover for training,” he says.

Asked about his toughest match in his 22-0 win career, he says that it was his 21st win, against Hirofumi Mukai. Not only because Mukai was a formidable opponent, but also “because I trained and fought with injuries all over my body”, Tso says.

When it comes to his training regimen, the champion says he needs to have “self-discipline and self-control to manage my timetable”.

And it hasn’t failed him yet. Tso is the first ever Hong Kong boxer to rank first in the super-flyweight boxing division and is revered as the city’s boxing superstar.

As the only professional boxer from Hong Kong, Tso has become a role model for young people in the city.

The boxer was recently featured in an inspiring Nike ad alongside other Hong Kong athletes with the tagline, “You can’t guarantee a win, but you can guarantee a fight” before he secured his 22nd win against Kono earlier this month.

When asked about what keeps him motivated, Tso says, “I hope the experiences I encounter [in my career] can inspire people. The opportunity to help others encourages me to persist in my boxing career.”

The 30-year old emphasises that it is important to wind down, and for him, it’s spending quality time with his wife and getting plenty of rest. “I think ‘time’ is something you need to treasure. I have already wasted a lot of it in the past, so [from now on] I will treasure every moment I spend on training and with my family members.”

The boxer recently partnered with Cartier in promoting the luxury brand’s latest LOVE series bracelet, and as a token of appreciation to his wife who has always stood by him, the couple posed for photos wearing matching LOVE bracelets.
