One of the rising stars in the world of music – 22-year-old English singer Dua Lipa – has announced she will be performing in Hong Kong in May.
Known for her husky, smoky voice, Lipa, who was born in London in 1995 to Albanian parents from Kosovo – an autonomous state in southeastern Europe – plans to perform at the MacPherson Stadium, in Mong Kok on May 1.
Here we take a look at five things you may not know about this singer-songwriter.
1. Big winner at 2018 Brit Awards
The singer-songwriter claimed two prizes – best British female solo artist and breakthrough act – at the prestigious Brit Awards on February 21, while earning the most nominations out of all the artists – five.
She was also nominated for album of the year, for her eponymous release, Dua Lipa, and single and video of the year for N ew Rules .
2. Avid YouTube user
At the age of 14, Lipa began her musical career by using YouTube as a platform to share her cover versions of her favourite songs by artists including Christina Aguilera and Nelly Furtado.
However, she was not discovered on YouTube.
3. Signed with Warner Music Group
In August 2015, the singer released her debut single, New Love, after being signed to Warner Music Group.
Her follow-up single, Be The One, released two months later, achieved huge success across Europe.
4. Dad is her rock star
Her father, Dukagjin Lipa, a musician with the Kosovan rock band, Oda, is her biggest inspiration.
She grew up around music at home, listening to her father’s songs.

5. Former restaurant waitress
Lipa returned to London on her own at the age of 15, after moving to Kosovo with her family, to pursue her dream of a career in music.
Before finding success she worked as a nightclub hostess, then as a waitress in a restaurant, to help pay the bills.
