Madonna is one of the most revered pop icons of the 21st century. Her influence on fashion, culture and music is unparalleled.

The Queen of Pop released her album, “Like A Virgin”, in 1984 and has continued to surprise audiences and reinvent herself decade after decade.

This year, Madonna announced on her Instagram that she is working on her 14th studio album. As an early celebration of her 60th birthday, she was featured on the cover of Vogue Italia’s August edition, which goes to show age is just a number for this pop diva.

To celebrate Madge’s (as she is known by her fans) birthday, we have compiled a list of our all-time favourite moments of her on stage.

1. ‘Like A Virgin’ – MTV Video Music Awards 1984

Madonna’s “Like A Virgin” album sold more than five million copies in the US when it was released. She was the first female artist to achieve this record. It was later certified diamond and sold over 21 million copies worldwide. Madonna made her first mark on pop culture with this performance.

2. ‘Express Yourself’ – Blond Ambition Tour 1990

It is difficult to choose just one moment from this tour that catapulted Madonna into iconic status in pop culture and it was not just her music that showed her to be both edgy and ahead of her time.

Rolling Stone called the tour an “elaborately choreographed, sexually provocative extravaganza” and proclaimed it “The best tour of 1990”. A live recording of the tour won a Grammy for best long form music video.

The song Vogue, brought the dance of the same name – which was previously performed underground in LGBTQ clubs – to the mainstream.

Like A Prayer, co-written by Prince, took Madonna from ’80s pop to sexual provocateur of the ’90s. The performance, with strong religious imagery, received backlash as the time but showed Madonna to always be pushing the envelope.

But ultimately we chose Express Yourself. When Madonna took to the stage in a cone shaped corset created by French designer Jean-Paul Gaultier, she showed herself to be a true fashion icon and counterculture revolutionary. It was a moment that was etched into pop culture history and still referenced today.

3. MTV Video Music Awards – 2003

More than two decades since Madonna was crowned Queen of Pop, she shocked the world with this performance where she kissed Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera (who had just burst onto the scene as pop princesses and were rivals). This is an iconic pop culture moment the world will never forget.

4. ‘Hung Up’ – Grammys 2006

We love this performance where Madonna showed that at 48 she was not done reinventing herself or her artistry. Rocking the stage in a skin tight purple leotard, the veteran did not look her age at all.

5. Rebel Heart Tour – Hong Kong/Macau 2016

Madonna’s 2016 tour was sprawled in controversy. She arrived late for shows, got drunk and cried on stage, dressed as clown to do stand-up comedy, and revealed a young fan’s breast.

But when Madonna was belting out Unapologetic Bitch and chose a random fan to come on stage, the fan turned out to be Hong Kong’s very own “King of Pop” Eason Chan. We loved seeing stage royalty together.
