Happy birthday Solar – K-pop girl group Mamamoo’s real shining star

Solar, the leader and main vocalist of K-pop girl group Mamamoo, isn’t just any mainstream artist.

From rocking renditions of popular global hits, fierce drumming skills to empowering pole dancing, the girl can do it all.

The Seoul-born multi-talented singer, songwriter and actress, whose real name is Kim Yong-sun, turns 28 today.

Check out the top four moments when Solar brought something unique to the stage!

Born to be ... a pole dancer

Imagine hanging onto a pole in front of thousands of people with their eyes fixated on you – and still delivering a powerful, sensual performance.

This is exactly what Solar did at the Mnet Asian Music Awards in Japan last December. Dressed in a shimmering gold outfit inspired by Cleopatra, she performed a solo performance to Mamamoo’s Born to Be.

The entire crowd watched in awe and cheered as she carried out elegant spins and heart-stopping drops – even stunning other watching K-pop stars, including members of IZ*ONE.

Having practised pole dancing for only a few months and, coupled with the pressure of performing in front of an huge crowd, Solar definitely took her artistry to a whole new level!

Hola, hermosa!

Spitting out random phrases here and there in a foreign language is always fun, but how about having to sing a chart-topping Spanish single all by yourself?

During Mamamoo’s “4 Season S/S” concert tour she performed a version of the Luis Fonsi ft Daddy Yankee’s smash hit Despacito.

Are K-pop stars Song Yun-hyeong of iKON and Momoland’s Daisy a couple? Maybe, maybe not …

Apart from getting the pronunciation of the Spanish lyrics exactly right, she also added perfect choreography to her stunning performance, including (another) cheeky pole dance session.

Disney dazzler

Just when we thought Solar couldn’t be any more versatile, she wows us again – by taking a rather whimsical approach this time.

Dressed in an elegant glittery white ball gown – and looking just like a princess – Solar performed a medley of three of the most popular – and difficult – Disney film songs.

Starting off with a sweet and angelic cover of Part of The World from The Little Mermaid, she moved on to Mulan’s Reflection and ended it all by hitting all the high notes of Let It Go from Frozen.

No one would have guessed that, despite the ease with which she sang these tracks, Solar is actually not that proficient at speaking English.

... and one last drumroll

Finally, let’s have a drumroll for one of Solar’s iconic talents – as a drummer.

As seen in footage from one of her concerts, she flawlessly takes over the drums for the opening of Justin Timberlake’s Sexy Back.

In a percussive display of girl power, she enchants the crowd by perfectly keeping the beat on her drum, while effortlessly twirling her drum sticks.

Water splashing from the surface of the drum as she hits the drum only adds to the spectacle.

Even those who haven’t heard of Solar before will definitely have had their heads turned.
