  • Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, 93, met her first US president while a princess aged 25, in 1951, and has gone on to meet 11 others

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth hosted a state banquet at Buckingham Palace on Monday for United States President Donald Trump during his three-day state visit to the United Kingdom, which includes the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

This visit is the second time that Trump has met the queen, following his first trip to Britain as US president last summer.

Even before she ascended the throne on February 6, 1952, the queen, who turned 93 in April and is currently the world’s longest reigning monarch, was playing a major role in easing and promoting the “special” diplomatic relationship between the US and the United Kingdom.

Over the course of the past 68 years she has met 12 American presidents – the first Harry Truman and most recently Donald Trump – at places including Buckingham Palace, the White House and even a baseball stadium, when she joined US President George H.W. Bush at the Baltimore Orioles’ home game with the Oakland Athletics in May 1991.

In 1951, when Elizabeth was 25 and still a princess, she was increasingly carrying out official duties on behalf of her cancer-stricken father, King George VI, who died on February 6, 1952.

In October 1951 she travelled to Washington for the first time to meet US President Harry Truman.
