Did Kim’s Convenience star’s playful tweet to Marvel help land him the title role in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings?

Marvel Studios’ announcement of the cast of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, its first ever Asian Marvel movie, has generated much speculation about who would play the title role of Shang-Chi. Punters had placed bets on actors ranging from Eddie Peng to Daniel Wu, so when it was announced that Simu Liu, best known for his role as Jung in Kim’s Convenience, would be taking up the mantle, the internet exploded.

But who is Simu Liu? Here are 5 interesting facts about the new superhero.

1. He was once an accountant

Simu Liu was born in Harbin, China. The 30-year-old emigrated with his parents to Canada when he was 5. To fulfil the expectations of his parents, who wanted their son to have a stable well-paid job, he studied finance and accounting at Ivey Business School for two years, and worked as an accountant at Deloitte, one of the “big four” accounting firms.

He left the company to explore his dreams of making it as an actor. Liu said on his Twitter feed that he was laid off because he “was so bad” at the job.
