The reality of their relationship, however, was less glamorous than it appeared on the outside, as Fox recounts in her new memoir Down the Drain, released on October 10. While she told Interview Magazine during their relationship that it was “cathartic” packing up her old clothes as part of her fashion “transformation”, she reflects on feeling “powerless” in her memoir as her friends packaged up her old garments.

1. Ye asked Fox to be his girlfriend the day after they met

The Uncut Gems actress writes in the memoir that a friend asked if he could pass on her number to a “famous artist”. After she gave her permission to do so, Ye texted her and “dozens of phone calls” followed. They finally met in person, she writes, at a New Year’s Party in Miami at the end of 2021.

The next morning, Fox woke up to “dozens of missed calls” from Ye, and they spent the day together before getting dinner that night at Carbone. There, Ye asked her to be his girlfriend as a photographer captured the moment.

“I shut the idea down,” Fox writes. “‘I think we should wait a few weeks. It feels really fast to take such a big step, no?’”

Their relationship, however, progressed, with Ye hiring two of Fox’s friends to style her that night. The next day, the photos of them at Carbone had made it online.

2. Ye’s team mostly wrote Fox’s famous Interview Magazine story about their first date in New York

Fox said that she wrote “a detailed paragraph recounting step by step how we met”, and sent it over to Ye. According to Fox, Ye immediately told her that “this version isn’t going to work”, before sending her a “completely fabricated” account of the evening several minutes later.

“I immediately shut it down, telling him that it sounds dumb and that I’m not going to send it,” she writes.

After a three-way phone call with Ye and an assistant, they landed on an in-between version of the story. “But the seed of doubt has been planted in my mind, and I can’t shake the feeling,” Fox writes. “I push the thoughts out of my head and remind myself how lucky I am to be in this position.”

3. Ye offered Fox a “boob job”

Fox tried on a shirt and realised that she couldn’t wear it with a bra. “I’ll get you a boob job, if you want,” Ye told her, Fox writes. Fox “kindly” turned him down, “But his words stick to me like a piece of lint on my clothes, and I can’t shake off the uncomfortable feeling.”

4. Fox felt “powerless” as Ye revamped her style

After Ye hired Fox’s friends to style her, Fox recounts that Ye began to more heavily style her. In one instance, she said that her friend-turned-stylist Tammy told her to come to the bathroom while she was out with Ye, waiting with a “mountain of clothes” to provide her with an outfit change.

Later, Fox writes, Tammy and her other friend-turned-stylist Liana came over to her flat to pack up her old clothes. “They don’t ask my input, they ask his,” Fox writes. “I watch, powerless, as my old life shrinks to fit inside the cardboard boxes. When they have their back turned, I pull things out and hide them under my bed for safekeeping.”

Given that the new clothes that Ye got for her wouldn’t fit in her flat, Fox would go to the former Neiman Marcus building, where Ye had rented out an entire floor, for fittings.

“I argue with the tailors because they never get my measurements right,” she writes. “I don’t realise that it’s because I’m shedding weight so rapidly.”

On her birthday, Fox writes that Ye told her to meet him across town at his hotel. There, Liana and Tammy presented her with a variety of Ye-approved options to wear for her party that night. Fox chose the “simplest” ensemble, writing that she felt “uneasy” as she looked at herself in the mirror.

5. Fox didn’t like some of Ye’s team

Fox mentions one of Ye’s friends several times, typically referring to him as the artist’s “annoying friend”. The night that she and Ye met, Fox writes that the friend told her that she was “doing entirely way too much” and needed to “chill out” while dancing at a party they were at.

Later, when she and Ye went to see Slave Play, the friend tagged along and spent “the whole time on his phone”. And later, the “annoying friend” was the one she claims rewrote her Interview Magazine story.

Fox and Ye later had an argument about their respective friends, after Ye began “listing” things that had been “bothering him” and saying that she needed to set “boundaries” with her friends.

“I let him know yet again how much I dislike certain members of his entourage who have proved to be opportunistic and duplicitous in the short time I’ve known them,” she writes.

6. Ye briefly stopped talking to her while on a “month-long phone break”

After the argument over their friends, Ye stopped talking to Fox, with his assistant telling her that he was taking a “month-long phone break”, she writes. The break allowed her to have more time with her son that wasn’t interrupted by “the never-ending phone calls and infinite texts”. Still, Fox found herself missing Ye.

7. Fox refused to sign an NDA during their relationship

Fox writes that an NDA was “passed around” her friends after she and Ye had been together for a short period of time. Some of them include the friends who had worked with both her and Ye as Fox’s stylists.

Fox said she refused to sign. “He can take over my life, but he’s not taking my voice,” she writes.

8. Fox believes her relationship with Ye impacted some of her professional opportunities

Fox writes that after travelling to Los Angeles for “a small commercial job”, the production team informed her that they couldn’t proceed with her “due to some ties with the artist’s estranged wife” – presumably, Kim Kardashian.

“I find it odd but they agree to pay me the full amount, so I let it go,” she writes.

Fox also recounted that Ye promised her that he would get her a “million-dollar deal” connecting her to an Italian denim company. After they broke up, however, the deal fell through. “‘It’s contingent on you being his girlfriend,’ I’m informed,” Fox writes.

9. Ye asked her and her friends to repeatedly pose with the Birkins he got them

“He makes us re-create the moment several times for the camera,” Fox writes. “We do as we’re told and awkwardly throw our arms up and scream for joy as he stands off in the background, looking on with pride.”

Fox writes that she suspected the gift was “nothing more than a publicity stunt”, feeling like it was insincere though she tried to “find gratitude” for the gift.
