Fame and celebrity

Chicago-native Lenae’s fame may have reached new heights recently, but the fashion-conscious musician has been releasing music since she was in high school and even opened for Sza in 2017

Ravyn Lenae’s hit R&B track Love Me Not” has become the soundtrack of social media this summer – despite it being a year old. The song, from Lenae’s second studio album Bird’s Eye, only gained traction after an account on Tik Tok shared a mash-up of the song with Solange’s 2012 track, “Losing You” last year, and it gradually gained momentum. Charting No 81 on Billboard’s Hot 100 this April, the popularity of “Love Me Not” has made the 26-year-old one of the hottest R&B musicians to watch right now.

Following the release of her song, Lenae has sold out shows, performed at Coachella, and is joining pop darling Sabrina Carpenter as the opening act of her North American tour. She’s also set to make her debut at Lollapalooza, a musical festival she grew up attending, next month in Chicago.

Born in January 1999, Ravyn Lenae was born in Chicago and was raised Christian. She grew up attending the Pullman Christian Reformed Church, where her grandfather served as a pastor, per The Banner.

Lenae told the magazine that her love for music started in church, where she grew up singing and learning how to play the guitar and piano from a young age. “It all started in church,” she told the magazine in 2017. “That’s the best place to share your gift – with people who know you and love you and support you.”

When she was 15, the “Skin Tight” singer participated in After School Matters, a Chicago programme that works with creative kids. In an interview with Ssense, Lenae said it was the first time she was able to make money through music, earning a US$100 stipend for her work with the choir. She used it to book her first studio session and released her first EP, Moon Shoes, while she was still at The Chicago High School for the Arts.

Since the release of Moon Shoes in 2015, Lenae has toured and worked with the likes of producer Steve Lacy, known for hits such as “Bad Habit” and “Mercury”. In 2017, she opened for R&B singer Sza during her Ctrl tour.
