Fame and celebrity

Before she starred in Feral and The Deuce, she was a dancer and then a poet – she also co-founded an all-femme non-binary film collective

Tell Me Lies co-stars Grace Van Patten and Jackson White are turning up the heat in a new Valentine’s Day campaign for Calvin Klein’s limited edition underwear and lounge capsule collection. But they’re not the only IRL couple on the set of the hit Hulu show.

As it turns out, actors Spencer House and Sonia Mena, who play on-screen couple Wrigley and Pippa, are dating too. After much speculation over the last few weeks, People confirmed the co-stars’ relationship status, reporting that they have actually been dating for several years.

Rumours about the couple’s romance first made rounds on the internet after the show’s make-up artist, Jenny Lin, mentioned their relationship in an interview for influencer Rose Gallagher’s Substack.

In the hit series, Mena plays Pippa, who befriends Lucy Albright (Van Patten) and Wrigley’s best friend Stephen DeMarco (Jackson White) during their time in college. The dual timeline series is set in 2015 and around a decade before, and is adapted from author Carola Lovering’s novel of the same name. It chronicles the toxic on-and-off relationship between Lucy and Stephen, as well as the messy friendships in their social circle, through regular flashbacks to their college days.

Here’s everything you need to know about Sonia Mena.

She always wanted to be a performer

Mena wanted to be a performer from a young age – though it took her a while to figure out what form this would take. Although she described herself as a “shy kid” in an interview with Junior High Los Angeles, a gallery and events space in Glendale, California, she began dancing at just three years old and pursued the practice for 15 years before realising it wasn’t what she wanted to do.

She moved on to poetry and spent a lot of time performing at the Destiny Arts Center in West Oakland. After she decided to pursue acting professionally, she made her acting debut in the 2019 film Feral and went on to star in TV shows such as The Deuce (2017). Tell Me Lies is her biggest project yet.

She’s non-binary
